A long-period comet is detected on a collision course with Earth. As scientists warn of the impending disaster, major nuclear powers launch intercontinental missiles in a desperate bid to shatter the threat. The missiles fail to stop the catastrophe; only fragments survive and begin raining down on the planet.

In a research lab, David Dmatti and his coworker Mark respond to an urgent crisis. Mark convulses and dies; the water supply is poisoned by toxins. News reports indicate the comet might carry a deadly pathogen contaminating the water, prompting a nationwide quarantine.

Authorities seize control of the city to enforce the quarantine and curb panic. David is separated from his wife Kate and daughter Alison as the government evacuates others and relocates the population. He makes a vow to survive and reunite with his family.

Driven by the need to protect his family, David slips away toward the Las Vegas Valley to find a colleague working on an antidote. He moves through a landscape already unsettled by the disaster, the danger mounting with each mile. The journey marks a turning point as his mission shifts from staying alive to saving others.
