Hatsumomo views Chiyo as a direct threat to her position as the top geisha in the okiya. When Chiyo arrives, Hatsumomo recognizes that she possesses natural beauty and grace that could eclipse her own status. Rather than mentoring the newcomer as tradition might suggest, Hatsumomo chooses to systematically destroy Chiyo's confidence and prospects, first through verbal abuse and then by framing her for theft after Chiyo witnesses her clandestine affair.

Mother adopts Sayuri immediately after her deflowering ceremony as a strategic investment. By making Sayuri her official daughter, Mother secures Sayuri's debts and earnings within the okiya, ensuring Mother profits from Sayuri's future career as a geisha. This adoption also elevates Sayuri's status in the hierarchy, making her a more desirable companion for high-paying clients and solidifying Mother's position as the okiya's matriarch.

Satsu is sold into forced prostitution in the red-light district, a darker fate than Chiyo's path in the okiya. While Chiyo at least has the opportunity to train as a geisha, Satsu enters a world of sexual servitude. When Satsu escapes and returns to find Chiyo, she pleads for help, but Chiyo's own precarious position prevents her from acting. Satsu ultimately disappears into the red-light district, and the sisters are permanently separated, with Chiyo later learning that both her parents have died.

The opening scenes establish the sisters' different destinies through the stark contrast in their initial treatment.

Hatsumomo's banishment results from a drunken confrontation with Sayuri that escalates into a fire.
