On June 19, 1987, at precisely 9:47 AM Eastern Standard Time, the planet encounters the tail of a rogue comet named Rhea-M, leading to bizarre and catastrophic events that last for just over a week. In the small town of Wilmington, North Carolina, machines inexplicably come to life, turning from mundane objects into deadly threats against humanity. A marquee sign at a local bank displays a rude insult, while an ATM boldly calls a customer an “asshole,” a cameo includes the real-life Stephen King, who even plays that bank client. Shockingly, the town’s drawbridge spontaneously raises, causing a horrifying spill of cars and trucks that results in casualties, witnessed by the elderly bridge keeper and his less-than-bright assistant.

At the Dixie Boy truck stop, we meet Bill Robinson, played by Emilio Estevez, a recently paroled ex-convict who now works as a short-order cook. His boss, the foul-mouthed Hendershot, portrayed by Pat Hingle, has a twisted system designed to exploit his employees, particularly the newly released parolees, subjecting them to endure overtime without pay. He cruelly threatens Bill with a return to prison if he refuses to comply and work extra hours without compensation.

As tension rises, various characters at the truck stop witness machines coming to life. Handy, a local truck driver, finds his unique vehicle, adorned with a giant green goblin’s face, operates autonomously, moving even when he has the keys. Meanwhile, mechanic Duncan Keller faces a frightful attack when a diesel fuel nozzle chaotically squirts diesel in his eyes, leaving him momentarily blind. In a shocking twist, a thief in the game room meets a grisly end as he is electrocuted while attempting to loot coins from an arcade machine.

The chaos intensifies when Wanda June, the waitress, suffers a severe injury from a rogue electric carving knife. Bill rushes to her aid, smashing the knife with a hammer, showcasing his heroic side amidst the madness. On another front, a little league baseball game turns deadly when a soda machine goes haywire, launching cans at remarkable speeds, tragically killing a player. As the horror unfolds, Deke, the catcher, barely escapes being run over by a driverless steamroller.

A gripping scene unfolds with Brett Graham, a female hitchhiker, frantically pulls into the Dixie Boy with a sleazy Bible salesman, Loman. With radio broadcasts warning of machine-related dangers becoming dangerously static, they have no choice but to confront the surging chaos. Deke desperately tries to make his way home while dodging a runaway lawnmower, with machines now wreaking havoc on their lives without remorse.

A peculiar mix of characters, from newlywed Curt and Connie to the hapless locals, all face their own perilous encounters with the machines, bringing an air of tension and dread as they realize their lives hang by a thread. Back at the truck stop, as the locals band together to confront the machine uprising, their fight for survival becomes a battle of wits and endurance.

When night falls, the suspense builds as the trucks outside begin to circle ominously, trapping the remaining survivors. As the next day dawns, with most vehicles having run out of fuel, a military vehicle and bulldozer arrive to renew the terror, resulting in tragedy for many of the truck stop’s inhabitants.

In a desperate bid for survival, Bill, Brett, Deke, and others devise an escape plan, leading to death-defying moments with tension-induced camaraderie. They expose themselves to the dangers outside, working together with weapons scavenged from the now-deceased Hendershot. However, when their plans go awry, they race against the machines to reach the safety of the nearby marina, battling to survive a world gone haywire.

As they navigate perilous encounters with machines, including a menacing driverless ice cream truck, they ultimately flee toward freedom, leaving chaos behind. In a stirring conclusion, the survivors manage to escape on a sailboat, an effort to find safety while ominous hints lead to the inevitable resolution of the mechanical mayhem brewing on Earth.

The film closes with the unsettling implication of what transpires after their struggle. A mysterious Russian missile destroys a UFO responsible for the chaos above, returning normalcy to Earth, hinting that the group of survivors may very well be the last bastion against a worldwide machine rebellion.
