Brett Leonard's film uses Ted Sallis as Man-Thing, the Florida swamp, burning fear, corporate exploitation, and indigenous or mystical forces surrounding the land, but invents sheriff Kyle Williams and a murder investigation as its main viewpoint. The comics' largely mute empathic creature and Nexus of All Realities become a more conventional lethal swamp monster inside an original horror plot.
