Gus Cantrell, an aging minor league pitcher, is ejected from a game following the infamous 'frozen ball trick,' which showcases his playful approach to the game. His ejection marks a pivotal moment in his career, leading to new opportunities beyond playing.

Roger Dorn, now owner of the Minnesota Twins, recruits Gus to manage the Buzz, the Twins' AAA minor league team. Gus's mission is to develop a talented, cohesive team from a diverse group of players, including ballet dancer turned ballplayer Lance 'The Dance' Pere and lifelong minor leaguer Frank 'Pops' Morgan.

Gus assembles a team with various backgrounds and skills, aiming to turn them into a competitive unit. Key players include Taka Tanaka, Pedro Cerrano, Hog Ellis, Billy 'Downtown' Anderson, and the team psychologist and pitcher Carlton 'Doc' Windgate.

Gus clashes with Leonard Huff, the snooty Twins manager, over team management and roster decisions, creating tension. Huff's arrogance contrasts sharply with Gus’s laid-back attitude and focus on developing players.

Gus and his fiancée Maggie Reynolds dine with Roger Dorn and Huff at an upscale restaurant, where Huff challenges Gus to a game between the Buzz and the Twins. Gus accepts the challenge, setting the stage for an impending showdown.

The game takes place at the Metrodome, with the Twins leading 3-0 until Downtown hits a game-tying home run in the 8th inning. In the bottom of the 9th, Huff manipulates the game by turning off the stadium lights, resulting in a tie, but media reports favor the Buzz for staying competitive.

Downtown Anderson is promoted to the Twins, despite Gus’s doubts about his readiness. His stint with the Twins causes him to struggle, revealing weaknesses and forcing him to grow as a hitter and player, with Gus mentoring him on becoming more well-rounded.

Under Gus’s leadership, the Buzz team improves significantly, culminating in winning their division title. Gus’s focus on player development and teamwork proves effective, elevating the minor league team to success.

Gus issues a challenge to Huff for another game at Buzz Stadium, promising that if the Buzz win, Gus can become the Twins’ manager. Huff agrees, setting the stage for a high-stakes rematch that will determine Gus’s future in Major League Baseball.

The rematch is intense, with the Twins leading 4-0 in the 6th inning, but the Buzz rally to win 5-4 thanks to Downtown’s crucial two-run homer. This victory secures Gus’s decision to stay and continue working with minor league players.

Following the victory, Gus opts to remain managing the Buzz, valuing his role in developing young players and transforming minor league talent into potential major league stars. His focus shifts from managing at the top to nurturing future stars.
