Ashley Black is depressed because her father Jack Black spends all his time on his job, leaving her and her older brother Joshua Black feeling overlooked. She records his radio show and clings to every broadcast, hoping for a glimmer of connection. The family heads to the small lakeside town of Glenorky, famed for a local legend about the mythical lake monster Orky, a presence that unsettles the town as surely as the waters themselves. They rent a cabin next to an elderly First Nations man who uses a wheelchair, a quiet counterpoint to the town’s legends and pressures.

In town, Jack meets Dr. Wanda Bell, a psychiatrist who is trying to help a support group of men who claim they have been possessed by Orky’s spirit. As Ashley explores the town and the lake, she eventually runs away, and Jack experiences the same eerie, unsettling moments. One night, Ashley climbs into a rickety tree-house to sleep, but the ladder begins to fail. When the rungs snap, Ashley falls; Jack, possessed by Orky, tries to reach her in time, but is knocked unconscious and ends up in the hospital the next day. The ordeal leaves him changed—more focused on his children, yet physically ill and growing weaker as the days pass.

Ashley and Joshua soon uncover a troubling truth: Orky’s possession is a desperate message about a dying creature, and the town’s salvation hinges on exposing a ruthless businessman who is dumping toxic waste into the lake. Determined to uncover the truth, the siblings enlist the help of the old man and venture into the woods to find a totem pole that might anchor their investigation. They are joined by Hiro, the son of a team of monster seekers, who brings a different perspective and courage to the plan.

Together, they infiltrate a factory where the dumping is concealed and attempt to reveal the hoax by sabotaging a mechanical “Orky” that’s meant to fool the town. The plan has dangerous stakes: as the machine Orky sinks toward the lake’s bottom near the dump site, the polluters scramble to cover their tracks. Yet an unseen creature frightens them away, and Ashley, Joshua, and Hiro glimpse Orky for the first time in a real moment of truth.

The villains are held to account for their actions, and the story moves to a dramatic revelation in an underground cave where Orky actually lives. Inside, the trio reunites with Jack, and they come face to face with Orky. Tragically, Orky dies from the poison in the waste, leaving the family shaken but not broken. They’re rescued from the cave when the old man summons a lightning bolt that seals the entrance, a stark reminder of the forces at work beyond human control.

The morning after, Jack encourages Ashley to keep believing in Orky. He suggests that faith and imagination might still connect them to the world beneath the water. That belief leads Ashley and Hiro to stay on the dock overnight, cookies left out as a quiet homage to the creature they seek to honor. When the cookies are found eaten, Ashley lets out a joyful scream, a hopeful sign that Orky may still be alive—whether in memory, in legend, or perhaps in a surprising, resilient return.
