Jack Foster, manager of an upscale art gallery, faces the impending sale of the gallery by Ruth's family, causing him great distress. Unable to afford to buy it himself, he considers selling his childhood home in Italy to gather funds. The situation sets the tone for Jack's desperate pursuit to keep his career and personal life afloat.

Jack travels to Tuscany with his estranged father Robert to inspect the old family house. The trip reveals their strained relationship, with Robert being aloof and dismissive, but also hints at his underlying connection to Jack’s family history. Jack hopes the house might be his ticket out of financial trouble.

Upon arriving, Jack and Robert find the house neglected and in disrepair. An estate agent, Kate, advises them that with fixing, it could be valuable. Jack quickly decides to sell the house as-is, while Robert suggests they might keep it, leading to tension over their differing visions.

In the local town, Jack meets Natalia, the restaurant owner, who expresses her love for the house. She jokes she could only buy it with risotto. A potential buyer finds the house unsatisfactory, but a trashy couple shows interest, prompting Robert to refuse sale to them, much to Kate’s approval. Jack reveals his marital struggles and feelings of failure to Natalia, highlighting his emotional turmoil.

In Italy, Jack meets Richard, a painter, and expresses his desire for a meaningful relationship with his father rather than money. He renews his connection with Natalia, and they agree to start anew, acknowledging past pain while embracing future possibilities.
