What Happens in That Certain Summer: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of That Certain Summer (1972) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Doug Salter, a divorced San Francisco contractor, is looking forward to a summer visit from his 14-year-old son Nick Salter. Nick lives in Los Angeles with his mother Janet Salter. He does not know that his father is in a committed relationship with Gary McCain, his life partner of several years.

Gary stays temporarily with his sister and brother-in-law so that Doug can come out to Nick and tell him about their relationship, rather than surprise him all at once. But Gary otherwise spends most of his time with Doug and Nick, and the boy notices his father seems unusually close to Gary. At one point, Nick sees the inscription on a watch — "To Doug With Love Gary" — and realizes his father and Gary are more than friends.

Nick's confusion grows, and Janet arrives from Los Angeles just as Doug and Gary search for Nick. Nick is at the cable car barn, where a sympathetic employee, realizing the boy has something on his mind, convinces him to go home. The conversation between Janet and Gary becomes a quiet, telling moment; Gary asserts:

> If I were a woman, this would all be acceptable!

Janet calmly replies:

> If you were a woman, I would know how to compete with you.

Meanwhile, Doug and Nick have a private talk. Nick has heard the word homosexuality but is not fully sure what it means. Doug tries to explain that, "Gary and I have a kind of marriage." The moment is emotionally heavy, and the visit ends with Nick preparing to return home. Doug and Janet speak briefly, and Janet offers hopeful advice: "Just give him a little time."

That Certain Summer Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about That Certain Summer (1972): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Gary stay with his sister while Nick was visiting?

Gary stayed with his sister and brother-in-law during Nick's visit so that Doug could come out to his son gradually rather than shocking him all at once. The arrangement was designed to give Doug time to explain his relationship with Gary in a controlled, thoughtful way rather than having Nick discover it unexpectedly. This careful approach reflects Doug's desire to ease Nick into understanding his father's life.

Foreshadowing: The timeline establishes early that this was a deliberate setup to facilitate the coming-out process.

Q2

What did Nick see on Doug's watch that revealed the truth?

When Doug reached into an aquarium, Nick saw the inscription on his father's watch which read 'To Doug With Love Gary.' This simple message made it clear that Gary and Doug were more than just friends, shattering Nick's assumptions about their relationship and forcing him to confront the reality that his father was in a romantic partnership.

Foreshadowing: Earlier in the visit, Nick had noticed how unusually close his father and Gary appeared, making the inscription the final piece of evidence.

Q3

Why did Nick run away after discovering the watch inscription?

Nick ran away because he was overwhelmed by the sudden realization that his father was in a romantic relationship with another man. He didn't fully understand what homosexuality meant but knew it represented something that challenged his existing understanding of family and love. The revelation confronted him with questions about his own beliefs and what this meant for his family.

Foreshadowing: Nick had already been growing increasingly uncomfortable and curious about the close dynamic between his father and Gary throughout the visit.

Q4

What did Gary mean when he said 'If I were a woman, this would all be acceptable'?

Gary's statement highlights the societal double standard around relationships. He was pointing out that if he were a woman in a relationship with Doug, their partnership would be socially accepted and celebrated, rather than something that causes confusion and discomfort. Janet's reply, 'If you were a woman, I would know how to compete with you,' shows her struggle with feeling displaced by another person she cares about, regardless of gender.

Foreshadowing: This conversation occurs after Nick has run away, adding tension to the family's search for him.

Q5

How does Doug explain his relationship with Gary to Nick?

Doug tells Nick that 'Gary and I have a kind of marriage,' directly acknowledging that their relationship mirrors the commitment and love of a traditional marriage. This explanation tries to frame their relationship in terms Nick can understand, comparing it to the marriage between his mother and himself, while being honest about its nature.

Foreshadowing: This conversation happens after Nick has had time to process the discovery and after Janet has arrived, showing the family is now working together.

Q6

What does Janet mean when she tells Doug to give Nick 'a little time'?

Janet's advice reflects the realistic pace of acceptance for someone learning about a parent's identity. She recognizes that Nick cannot fully process and accept this revelation immediately, and that forcing a quick resolution would be counterproductive. The message is hopeful, the situation is not hopeless, but requires patience and space for Nick to work through his feelings on his own terms.

Foreshadowing: This comes after the emotionally charged events of the visit, including Nick's running away and the difficult conversations.

Q7

Why does the cable car employee help Nick?

The cable car employee encounters Nick at the barn and, sensing the boy is troubled, offers him understanding and encouragement to go home. This stranger's kindness provides Nick with a moment of comfort during his confusion and shows that compassion can come from unexpected places. It helps ease the immediate crisis and gives Nick a path forward.

Foreshadowing: This occurs during Nick's disappearance, after he has run away from his father.

Q8

Why is this movie considered groundbreaking?

That Certain Summer was among the first American television productions to portray homosexuality with compassion and dignity, depicting a gay character not as a stereotype or tragic figure but as a loving partner and father. The film treats its subject matter with nuance, showing the emotional complexity of coming out within a family rather than focusing on drama or tragedy.

Foreshadowing: The entire narrative is built around presenting a gay relationship as a genuine, loving partnership comparable to any other marriage.

Q9

What makes the ending bittersweet rather than fully resolved?

The film ends without Nick fully accepting or understanding his father's relationship, Nick is still processing the information as he prepares to return home. However, there is hope because Janet assures Doug that Nick just needs time, suggesting that with patience and continued honesty, the family can eventually reach understanding. The ending acknowledges that meaningful change takes time rather than offering easy closure.

Foreshadowing: The entire visit has been building toward this moment of truth, and the film deliberately avoids a neat resolution to reflect real-life complexity.
