The story opens in Shanghai in 1942, during the turmoil of World War II under Japanese occupation. The atmosphere is tense, as Mrs. Mak makes a phone call in a café, setting the stage for her reflective journey.

Wong Chia Chi, a young woman abandoned by her father, is introduced. The narrative takes us back to 1938, highlighting her struggle as she navigates university life without any support from her family.

At the university, Wong meets the charming Kuang Yu Min, who runs a drama society aiming to inspire patriotism among students. Their meeting ignites Wong's passion for acting, leaving a significant impact on her.

Embracing her new passion, Wong joins the drama troupe, where she becomes the leading lady. Her talent and dedication both captivate her peers and draw Kuang nearer to her, strengthening their bond.

Wong and Kuang, alongside their fellow students, devise a dangerous plot to assassinate Mr. Yee, a significant figure collaborating with the Japanese. This conspiracy reveals the heightened stakes for the group, propelled by their desire for patriotism.

To gain entry into Mr. Yee’s life, Wong adopts the identity of Mrs. Mak. Her mission involves gaining the trust of Yee through his wife, which requires her to navigate a web of deceit and manipulation.

As Wong immerses herself in her role, her transformation is both deep and disorienting. She evolves mentally and physically, struggling to maintain her own identity amidst the facade she creates.

Just as Wong confronts her dismal life, Kuang re-emerges, now a key figure in the resistance. He re-recruits her into their perilous mission, prompting her return to the guise of Mrs. Mak.
