Hillary White, an architect, nourishes fantasies of being swept off her feet and saved by a white knight, which she writes about in her hidden journals. Frustrated by her inattentive boyfriend Craig, she retreats into these fantasies as a form of escape. She keeps the journals hidden in her office at Figueroa Plaza.

On a night when she leaves work with Craig, the two become trapped in the building's parking garage. Sam, a security guard obsessed with Hillary, has manipulated events to keep them isolated from the outside world. The trap heightens the sense that he controls their fate.

As part of his machinations, Sam murders a businesswoman who had threatened his plans. The killing underscores the depths of his obsession and his readiness to eliminate anyone who stands in his way. The act takes place within the parking garage area nearby the building.

Sam covertly causes Craig to fall down an elevator shaft, an accident that goes unnoticed by Hillary. He then restarts the lifts, trapping the couple in the parking garage.

After the setup, Sam awkwardly tries to woo Hillary, treating her as a prize. Hillary storms off, furious to learn that Sam has been reading her diaries.

Hillary's triggered fire alarm draws attention, and two servicemen arrive to inspect it. Sam shoots the servicemen in front of Hillary, eliminating witnesses and increasing the danger in the building.

Sam captures Hillary and locks her in a secret lounge that contains a shrine dedicated to her. The confinement isolates her from Craig and confirms Sam's possessive fantasy.

Sam disposes of the two workmen's bodies and realizes that Craig is alive and searching for Hillary. He remains a dangerous antagonist as he stalks the couple within the building.

Sam incapacitates Craig with a trap, but cannot kill him because he is out of bullets. He then returns to confront Hillary, forcing a tense standoff inside the sealed building.

Hillary uses seduction to distract Sam, distracting him and allowing her to stab him in the back with a piece of glass. This assault gives her the chance to escape and reunite with Craig.

The couple attempt to escape through a tunnel in a storage area, but it has been blocked off. They fight Sam and lure him into a trap that leaves him hanging upside-down from an elevator.

Hillary breaks through the office tower's front door with a piece of construction equipment she unearthed, forcing the final confrontation on the roof. Sam frees himself and, over the PA, threatens to murder them if Hillary leaves.

At the rooftop rendezvous, Sam handcuffs himself to Hillary and threatens to leap from the roof, turning the moment into a deadly stalemate. He uses the brink as leverage to control the outcome.

Craig arrives, proclaims his love, and is willing to die for Hillary. His devotion causes Sam to realize that Craig truly cares about Hillary and that he is unworthy of winning her.

After removing their shackles, Sam jumps to his death from the roof, ending his obsession and the threat he posed. Hillary and Craig are left to find a way to safety together.
