Love Me Instead

After 14 years behind bars, Musa is granted a rare, single-day parole to reunite with his daughter before he must return to finish the last three years of his sentence. A prison guard named Sedat is assigned to accompany him on this emotional journey, ensuring he returns on time and safely escorts him back to life behind bars. The daughter he longs to see is Yonca, who is now under the care of his old friend Nuriye, a woman whose presence hints at a complicated past that Musa is only just beginning to face.

The story unfolds in flashbacks that peel back layers of pain and consequence. Musa is shown having shot and killed a man who attempted to sexually abuse Nuriye, an act that marks the decisive line between crime and protection in Musa’s eyes. The film also reveals an extra-marital affair between Musa and Nuriye, a secret that helps explain the tangled loyalties surrounding Yonca’s upbringing. In the wake of these events, Musa surrenders to the police, while his wife vows he will never see their daughter again. Soon after, tragedy strikes when Musa’s wife dies in a traffic accident, leaving Yonca in the care of reluctant grandparents before Nuriye steps in.

When Musa finally meets Yonca, joy floods through him. He slips away from Sedat’s watch while the officer is asleep, and they wander the town, revisiting the restaurant where Musa once felt at home as a child. Yet the neighborhood around Nuriye’s building is shadowed by danger: drug dealers and, in particular, Haluk, who runs a gambling den and frequently targets Musa’s daughter with predatory behavior. Haluk’s darker appetites are revealed through a troubling scene where he watches a pornographic video featuring a girl in a school uniform, exposing a disturbing fetish that underscores the peril surrounding Yonca.

Meanwhile, Musa’s mother Gülendam is still alive but battles intermittent dementia, and her memory becomes a poignant thread running through Musa’s night of reckoning. The group—Musa, Nuriye, Sedat, and Yonca—eventually makes for the bus station. As the moment of departure nears, Musa’s emotions overflow and he confronts Yonca, asking who she truly is, and realizes with a painful clarity that the girl standing before him is not his daughter. A sudden revelation from Musa’s mother restores a cruel truth: the real Yonca died years ago due to drug addiction, and a nurse had lied to spare Musa’s feelings by presenting another girl as his daughter.

This chilling truth rekindles Musa’s rage, but Sedat intervenes, offering him a choice: shoot him or let him go. Sedat’s mercy is surprising—he even returns Musa’s weapon and allows him to walk away. Fuelled by grief and vengeance, Musa confronts the gang that harmed his daughter, exacting a brutal toll on those responsible. Yet his crusade ends in tragedy as he is fatally shot by the arriving police, bringing his vigilante fight to a sudden close.

In the final, poignant scene, Layla—Yonca, now known as a law graduate—is seen dining with Sedat, Sedat’s wife, and Nuriye. They raise a toast to Musa, acknowledging him as Layla’s father in a sense that transcends the day they shared. The closing image lingers on Musa and Layla’s photograph, a visual reminder of the man who gave everything for a child who was never truly his, and the enduring legacy of a father’s love that survives beyond a single day.
