Love at First Sight

Hadley Sullivan misses her flight to London and is rebooked on the next one, setting the stage for an unexpected encounter. At a charging station, she meets Oliver Jones, a British Yale student who lends her his charger. They quickly hit it off and plan to have dinner together in the food court.

On the airplane, Oliver ends up seated beside Hadley after a seat belt issue moves him. They spend the flight getting to know each other and falling in love. The journey becomes a turning point in both their lives.

After touchdown, Oliver quietly places his phone number into Hadley’s, hoping she can reach him. Her battery dies and she loses the number, leaving her with no easy way to reconnect with him. She heads to her dad’s wedding alone, uncertain if she'll ever see him again.

Hadley attends her father Andrew’s wedding to Charlotte and is moved by Charlotte’s kindness. She overhears friends saying they’ll leave early for a memorial service, and realizes Oliver has come to London for his mother’s memorial, not a wedding. The realization unsettles her as she contemplates love and loss.

Oliver’s brother Luther drives him to the Shakespeare-themed memorial, reuniting him with his father Val and his terminally ill mother, Tessa. Oliver wrestles with the fact that his mother may pass away soon, shaping his guarded approach to emotions.

Hadley arrives at the memorial and meets Oliver’s family. She is initially puzzled by the idea of Tessa being alive, only to realize she is attending a service for someone who is ill but still present. She ultimately finds Oliver amid the gathering.

Oliver delivers his mother’s eulogy and confesses that he has tried to measure life in numbers. He acknowledges that no statistic can capture his mother’s presence or meaning, revealing the limits of his rational approach.

Hadley realizes she forgot her backpack at the memorial and attempts to return to the reception on foot, getting lost in the process. She borrows a phone, calls her dad, and is picked up with Charlotte, bringing a sense of closure to her immediate dilemma.

Andrew commends Hadley for taking a chance on Oliver and offers closure about his divorce from her mother. He and Charlotte apologize for pressing Hadley too hard, and the trio heads to the wedding reception together.

Oliver’s family teases him about Hadley, but they encourage him to pursue her. They discover Hadley’s backpack containing Andrew’s wedding invitation and urge Oliver to go find her, hinting at a potential reunion.

Oliver tracks Hadley down at the reception and shares his three greatest fears—germs, the dark, and surprises—rooted in his mother’s cancer. He admits his true feelings, and Hadley reciprocates with a kiss that seals their connection.

The narrator reveals that Hadley and Oliver will stay together for the rest of their lives, remaining married for 58 years and having a daughter. Their love is presented as enduring beyond the immediate moment.
