El Jaibo, José Luis de Madariaga escapes juvenile jail and returns to lead his street gang, a harsh presence in a Mexico City slum where poverty shapes every choice. The youths prey on the vulnerable and dream of quick gains, and the gang’s latest attempt targets a blind street musician. After an initial misstep, they press their pursuit, chasing down the musician and turning an act of theft into a brutal demonstration of power: they beat him and wreck his instruments, leaving a silent warning in their wake.

With the help of El Jaibo, the gang locates Julián, the boy believed to have sent him to jail. El Jaibo conceals a rock in a sling and confronts Julián, who refuses to fight, insisting that violence wouldn’t be fair. The moment Julián turns to leave, El Jaibo delivers a brutal strike to the back of his head and then finishes him with a stick, taking Julián’s money in the process. The crime plants a seed of fear and resentment, and El Jaibo cautions Pedro not to report what happened, even as he shares Julián’s money to draw Pedro further into the gang’s law of silence.

Pedro’s home life adds another layer of hardship. His mother’s jealousy and lack of warmth leave him feeling abandoned and alone, yet Pedro resolves to change his ways and seeks a new start as an apprentice to a blacksmith. The fragile balance is unsettled when El Jaibo arrives with news of their secret, and a theft occurs: a knife goes missing from the blacksmith’s table, a small act that signals a larger drift from innocence. Pedro is soon accused of the crime and sent to the juvenile rehabilitation program, the “farm school,” where the strict routine and rough environment force him to survive through conflict, even killing two chickens during a fight.

The program’s tests intensify Pedro’s guilt and desperation. The principal gives him a 50 pesos bill to run errands, a simple task that becomes a test of trust and consequence. Pedro leaves with the money but soon encounters El Jaibo once more, who steals the funds and deepens the rift between the two boys. Unable to maintain a façade of goodness, Pedro confronts El Jaibo again, and their fight ends in a stalemate. In a moment that defines Pedro’s sense of truth, he publicly accuses El Jaibo of Julián’s murder, challenging the gang’s code of silence and drawing the police into the unraveling thread of violence.

El Jaibo flees, but fate takes a sharper turn when a blind observer overhears the accusation and tips off the authorities. Pedro, driven by a need to stop the cycle of violence, tracks El Jaibo down once more, but the pursuit ends in tragedy as El Jaibo murders him. As he tries to escape, the police close in and shoot him, cutting short a life shaped by the brutality of the streets. The city’s alleys close in around Pedro’s body, discovered by Meche and her grandfather in a shed, a stark reminder of the cost of a world where loyalty and vengeance trump compassion.

Meche, who has watched the toll of the streets from the margins, and her grandfather find Pedro’s lifeless form. Rather than seeking justice, they choose to remove the evidence, carrying Pedro’s body to a cliff littered with refuse. Their journey back through the city ends with a somber encounter: Pedro’s mother, who once seemed detached from her son’s hardships, now moves with a new urgency, searching for him and forced to confront the consequences of a life shaped by neglect and violence.

In this stark, unflinching portrayal of urban poverty, the film paints a portrait of children caught in a web of crime, fear, and survival. The actions of the boys ripple outward, exposing a cycle of aggression and desperation that touches families and communities alike. The camera lingers on quiet moments—the look of fatigue in a worker’s hands, the ache of a mother’s distant affection, the weight of a city that never fully forgives—creating a persistent atmosphere of melancholy and resilience.
