As the Cyber Division headquarters experiences a sudden blackout, FBI Deputy Director Miguel Bowman urgently communicates with local law enforcement across the nation. He orders them to recruit the best computer hackers to help address the mysterious situation.

NYPD detective John McClane is dispatched to New Jersey with the task of capturing the notorious cybercriminal Matthew Farrell. Unbeknownst to McClane, this mission will lead to life-threatening complications.

As McClane and Farrell converge, they unexpectedly face a surprise attack from assassins hired by the formidable hacker Thomas Gabriel. Despite their perilous situation, both men manage to escape the initial ambush with their lives.

While on their way to Washington D.C., Matthew Farrell explains that he has been developing an algorithm designed for ethical hacking purposes. This revelation highlights the potential of his skills as they confront the cyber threats.

Simultaneously, Thomas Gabriel's team initiates a large-scale cyber attack targeting critical nation infrastructures. Farrell identifies this operation as a 'fire sale,' aiming to incapacitate essential services nationwide.

After arriving at DHS headquarters, McClane and Farrell are ambushed in a helicopter attack orchestrated by Mai Linh, posing as a dispatcher. In a gripping battle, McClane fights back and successfully brings down the helicopter.

McClane and Farrell investigate a utility superstation in West Virginia and find that Gabriel's crew has taken it over. They engage in a fierce battle to eliminate their adversaries and save the station.

Following Linh's death at the hands of McClane, Gabriel retaliates by redirecting natural gas pipelines to the superstation, causing a widespread blackout in an attempt to eliminate both McClane and Farrell.

McClane and Farrell travel to Baltimore to consult renowned hacker Frederick 'Warlock' Kaludis. Together, they aim to retrieve critical code that will aid them in their ongoing battle against Gabriel's cyber plots.

At the Social Security Administration building in Woodlawn, Maryland, McClane and Farrell uncover that it is an NSA facility created to protect important records during a cyber attack. Gabriel plans a malicious download of sensitive data.

In a chilling turn of events, Gabriel uses his control over the NSA facility to locate and abduct McClane's estranged daughter, Lucy. This act intensifies the urgency for McClane and Farrell to stop him.

As McClane and Farrell rush to the Woodlawn facility, they face immense pressure to thwart Gabriel's plans. Farrell finds himself in grave danger as he attempts to encrypt the stolen data while confronting Gabriel's henchmen.

In a dramatic confrontation, McClane locates Gabriel holding Lucy hostage while Farrell suffers from his injuries. The tension escalates when Gabriel demands that Farrell decrypt the stolen data, leading to a fatal decision.

Despite being wounded, McClane bravely fights back against Gabriel's henchmen. In a daring move, he shoots himself through the shoulder to take down Gabriel, ending the immediate threat to his daughter's life.

As chaos subsides and the FBI arrives, Farrell manages to eliminate the last of Gabriel's supporters. McClane acknowledges Farrell's bravery and the bond formed through their harrowing experiences, signaling a new chapter in their relationship.
