Benny completes a correspondence phonograph sales course and leaves his mother and girlfriend behind in Cucamonga to pursue a career in Los Angeles. He hopes the big city will offer real opportunities and a chance to prove himself. This departure marks the start of a chaotic journey into sales.

Benny arranges a meeting with his Uncle Clarence, who works as a bookkeeper for the Hercules Vacuum Cleaner Company. He hopes Clarence can help him land a sales position. The meeting sets Benny on a path to the company's doors, albeit through imperfect circumstances.

During the interview, sales manager Eddie Morrison mistakes Benny for a fashion model and has him strip. Hazel Temple, Morrison's secret wife, intervenes and suggests Benny should be hired to avoid an accounting scandal. Benny begins to see a precarious path forward at Hercules.

Benny is fired from his salesman post after only a single day on the job. The company continues its cover-up surrounding the accounting scheme, leaving Benny without employment. Clarence promptly looks for a new placement for him.

Clarence transfers Benny to the Hercules Stockton branch, which is run by Tom Chandler. The relocation offers a fresh chance but places Benny in a new environment with different people. He heads to Stockton ready to prove himself anew.

At Stockton, Benny endures a prank by coworkers who convince him he can read minds. The joke unexpectedly boosts his confidence and makes him more persuasive in sales. This boost culminates in him achieving the status of Hercules' Salesman of the Year.

Benny is sent back to the Los Angeles branch to receive his award. While there, he demonstrates his 'abilities' to Morrison and hints at Morrison's secret bank account. The demonstration elevates the tension between Benny and Morrison.

Morrison's wife Hazel accompanies Benny to her apartment to extract more information. Benny becomes ill after smoking a cigar, and Hazel gives him a sedative but mistakenly takes it herself. Benny falls asleep as Morrison returns home, fearing the worst.

At the awards ceremony that evening, Benny learns the mind-reading trick was a sham and overhears Morrison speaking ill of him. The truth behind his recent success comes to light with mixed emotions of vindication and betrayal. The moment marks a turning point in his career.

Benny returns to his mother and girlfriend in Cucamonga, where he encounters Chandler, Ruby, and Hercules president Mr. Van Loon. They reveal that Morrison has been fired and replaced by Chandler. Benny is named the sales manager of the Cucamonga district.

With Morrison out, Tom Chandler assumes leadership while Benny cements his new role as Cucamonga district sales manager. The company begins reorganizing under the new leadership, and Benny starts implementing new sales strategies. The partnership reshapes his career trajectory.

The film closes with Benny having evolved from a naïve country boy into a capable district manager. He returns to Cucamonga with renewed confidence and a sense of independence, surrounded by his mother and girlfriend.
