Clément, the reserved son of a wealthy Parisian industrialist, has joined a far-right terrorist organization. His ebullient wife Anne, once a popular actress, remains unaware of his political commitments until she discovers a disassembled bazooka tucked away in their bedroom. One night, under orders from an associate named Serge, Clément uses the bazooka to blow up the apartment of a prominent socialist politician. The media report that the politician died in the explosion, and Serge calls from the airport, telling him to disappear.

Seeking cover, he takes refuge with Paul, an old school friend who now runs a socialist printing press, at an isolated watermill. The media later claim the politician was not at home and that the rocket had destroyed a dummy, leading Clément to realize Serge set him up. Fueled by a desire for revenge, he sets off to hunt Serge. Meanwhile, Anne, left at the watermill, grows closer to Paul, who is kind and nonjudgmental, and he encourages her to emerge from loneliness and return to acting. Months pass, Clément does not return, and the two become lovers; Anne even becomes pregnant.

Clément then returns from South America, having killed his opponent there with the help of local Nazis. With a cadre of right-wing thugs, he beats Paul and leaves him a pistol, saying they will settle things in a one-on-one shoot-out. One day, he calls from a wooded island opposite the watermill, ordering Paul to bring the pistol and meet him there. Though Anne is terrified, Paul uses military skills from the Algerian War to outwit his opponent. In the end, Paul and Anne can start a new life together.
