Last Christmas

In 1999, the Andrich family gathers for a joyful Christmas service in Yugoslavia. Young Katarina impresses everyone with her singing talents in the choir, filling her parents, Petra and Ivan, along with her sister Marta, with pride.

Fast forward to 2017, Katarina has transformed into Kate, now living in London and estranged from her family. Her fractured relationships with her mother and sister haunt her as she navigates her new life filled with chaos and regret.

After a night out, Kate finds herself in a stranger's apartment, an awkward situation that quickly escalates when the man's wife arrives. Unceremoniously kicked out onto the street, Kate reflects on her unfulfilled and dismal life.

Kate gets a job as an elf in a Christmas shop run by Santa. Despite her ongoing mistakes, Santa sees potential in her, highlighting the comedic struggles she faces in her new role.

A surprise visit from her sister, Marta, forces Kate to confront unresolved issues with her mother. This emotional encounter only deepens Kate's reluctance to improve her family relationships.

At the Christmas shop, Kate meets Tom, a charming and quirky man. Their introduction is comically interrupted by a bird targeting Kate, setting a humorous tone for their budding relationship.

Kate tries to reconnect with her past ambitions but faces numerous failures, including a disastrous audition for a theater show. Her self-esteem plummets as her mistakes continue to catch up with her.

While on a bus, Kate speaks out against discrimination towards a Yugoslavian couple. This act of bravery allows her to reconnect with her heritage as she introduces herself by her childhood name, Katarina.

A visit to Tom's apartment reveals devastating news: he passed away months earlier, and Kate received his heart in a transplant. This poignant revelation forces Kate to confront her feelings of loss and gratitude.

Feeling lost, Kate sits on a park bench filled with memories of Tom, where she experiences his spirit visiting her. He offers her comfort, assuring her that everything will be alright as she navigates her grief.

In a culmination of her journey, Kate successfully orchestrates a Christmas show with shelter patrons. Graced in a festive dress, she performs ‘Last Christmas’ with her family, showcasing her growth and newfound connections.
