Flint rules the local natives by dispensing small quantities of sugar and liquor, occasionally substituting kerosene. He stages elaborate magic tricks to create the illusion of supernatural power, keeping the populace in awe and fear. His control centers on an 80-mile circle around his jungle compound, where entry or exit requires his consent.

Over the past eighteen years Flint has plotted revenge against Gregg, the man who crippled him and ran off with his wife. He has built the 80-mile ring as a prison around his territory to enforce his plan. His ultimate scheme involves humiliating Gregg by displaying his daughter Ann.

Years ago Flint arranged for Gregg's infant daughter to be raised by nuns in a Cape Town convent, supposedly to keep her 'clean in body and mind'. The plan separated Ann from Gregg and cemented Flint's future manipulation.

Flint sends Hogan to Cape Town to fetch Ann. Disguised as a missionary, Hogan persuades the young woman to travel with him to confront her father Gregg.

Ann arrives at the Congo camp as a hardened alcoholic, having been kept in a Zanzibar brothel and forced into prostitution. Flint uses daily servings of brandy to maintain control while he degrades her as part of his revenge.

A cynical, drug-addicted doctor named Kingsland arrives and befriends Ann. Their relationship develops under mutual need: he seeks sobriety to operate on Flint, while she seeks companionship and purpose.

To force sobriety, Flint binds Kingsland with ropes and places him in a swamp, with his head above water and leeches siphoning away the drugs. The grim treatment is designed to purge the doctor so he can continue to serve Flint.

Kingsland eventually performs the operation on Flint to relieve his pain, enabling Flint to maintain his power over the camp. The procedure marks a turning point in Flint's dependence on the doctor.

Gregg arrives at the camp and Flint taunts him, boasting about the abuse of his enemy's daughter. Gregg proves that Ann is actually Flint's daughter, a revelation that stuns Flint.

Flint pleads with Gregg not to depart from the compound, warning that Fuzzy will shoot him if he leaves. Gregg nevertheless chooses to go, ignoring the warning and continuing toward the jungle.

Gregg departs despite Flint's pleas, and Fuzzy shoots him as he patrols the surrounding jungle. The assassination eliminates the one man who might challenge Flint's power, escalating the danger for Ann.

Desperate to save Ann, Fuzzy guides her, Kingsland, Tula, and Cookie through an escape tunnel toward the swamp. Flint stays behind to draw off the natives and dies in the effort, praying that Ann will escape safely.

Flint dies while defending his remaining captives, and his pet chimpanzee later finds his necklace among the ashes of the pyre, a reminder of his brutal reign. The death seals the collapse of his control over the camp.

Ann and Kingsland escape onto a riverboat, waiting to be married by the captain. Kingsland describes their future home in Sicily, signaling a new life beyond Flint's shadow.
