In the bustling port city of Surabaya, Indonesia, Fred Wilson, a promotions expert for the Petrox oil conglomerate, readies himself for an ambitious expedition aboard one of their exploration vessels. As the ship embarks, an unexpected stowaway manages to sneak on board, concealing himself beneath the canvas of a lifeboat.

The ship sails into the tumultuous South Indian Ocean, prompting Wilson to convene the crew to share the mission details—though he feels it’s best kept a secret until they are far from the familiar shores. Displaying photographs of a seemingly harmless fog bank, Wilson reveals that one is an ancient image captured by a U.S. Navy vessel in the 1940s while the other was taken just weeks prior. Adding to the intrigue, he presents a satellite photo taken from a wayward U.S. satellite, revealing indications of an island lurking behind the fog, potentially rich in oil. Wilson’s excitement grows, as he sees this find as a much-needed boon for Petrox, especially amidst the oil crisis afflicting the United States.

However, their meeting is disrupted by the same individual who stowed away, introducing himself as Jack Prescott, a primate paleontologist who specifically boarded the ship to reach the elusive island. Jack shares the ominous legend that a colossal creature dwells on the island, revered as a deity by the native tribe that resides there. He warns of a peculiar ritual that involves offering a beautiful woman—the very kind of offering intended to appease the beast.

Believing Jack is a threat, Wilson orders him detained while they confirm his story. But as he is being escorted away, Jack spots a life raft adrift, leading the crew to rescue Dwan, an unconscious yet enchanting blonde who had perished after her yacht sank during the earlier storm. Dwan, awakening from her ordeal, recounts her tale of being on the ill-fated yacht, which caught fire while she attempted to escape the viewing of a film.

Dwan quickly captivates the hearts of the crew, and Jack is granted permission to join the exploration as a photographer. As the ship approaches the fog bank, a landing craft is deployed with Jack and Dwan on board. Once the fog dissipates, they glimpse the mysterious island and establish a beachhead. Intrigued, they venture inland but are halted by an imposing wall built from gigantic timber and mud. While Wilson attributes its creation to an ancient civilization, Jack insists recent repairs suggest it was constructed to guard against an unforeseen menace.
