In a world teetering on the edge of chaos, Vince (Val Kilmer) and his girlfriend Fay (Joanne Whalley) embark on a reckless heist to steal $850,000 from two ruthless Las Vegas mobsters. The heist quickly spirals out of control, claiming a life and leaving Fay in a moral quandary about their choices. When a violent disagreement over the money erupts, Fay takes matters into her own hands, knocking Vince unconscious and making a daring escape with the cash.
Meanwhile, Jack Andrews (Michael Madsen), a struggling private investigator in Reno, grapples with his own demons after the tragic drowning of his wife. Overwhelmed by debt and regret, he encounters Fay, who presents herself as a battered spouse seeking refuge. Despite the apparent fabrications in her story, Jack’s inherent compassion drives him to assist her in staging her own death.
Their plan to fake Fay’s demise at a motel falls apart when a seemingly trivial mistake—a matchbook bearing Jack’s name—is left behind, leading to unforeseen consequences. As Jack grows more enamored with Fay, he anxiously agrees to meet her again, only to discover that she has mysteriously vanished with half of their arrangement.
The next morning, Jack finds himself embroiled in a murder investigation concerning Fay, facing unwarranted accusations due to insufficient evidence. Meanwhile, Vince learns of Fay’s supposed disappearance from a newspaper article and becomes determined to track both Fay and Jack down. As Jack comes to terms with Vince’s pursuit, his financial troubles intensify when loan sharks reclaim the advance Fay had bestowed upon him.
Jack’s confrontation with Vince ensues, where he skillfully evades harm and resolves to pursue Fay. His quest takes him to Las Vegas, where his partner Alan reveals that Fay is hiding at a hotel under a new identity. It isn’t long before Jack locates her amidst the lively casino atmosphere, yet their reunion is interrupted by the watchful pit boss, who alerts the mobsters of Fay’s dubious activities tied to their stolen money.
Just as Jack tries to navigate the labyrinth of intrigue surrounding Fay, two mob enforcers invade her hotel room; in a shocking twist, Fay surfaces holding a gun, skillfully eliminating one thug while the other escapes in haste. On the run together, Jack learns the truth: Fay had stolen the money from Vince to escape his vice-like grip and avoid his wrath.
Their escape leads them to a serene lakeside motel, where simmering tensions culminate in an ardent encounter. Despite second-guessing his trust in Fay, Jack proposes they start afresh in Maine. But as they wake the next day, the radio broadcast reveals that the police are on their tail for the murder of a mob family member, prompting Fay to suggest they should once again fake their deaths to elude capture.
Upon enacting their plan on the lake, Jack carefully outlines how they’ll pretend to drown and swim to safety, retrieve the stolen money, and escape to Maine. As Jack departs to enact their strategy, uncertainty looms over their fateful plan. Ultimately, he wrestles with whether to stick to their agreement or take a drastic detour with the ill-gotten gains.
Back at the motel, Jack discovers a scene of chaos, finding Fay at the mercy of Vince, who brandishes a firearm and demands to know the location of their treasure. With a poised demeanor, Jack plays his cards right, aware that any rash move could endanger them both. In a calculated gamble, he offers a compromise involving half of the loot, forcing Vince to contemplate a decision, but Vince’s vengeance erupts as he brutally assaults Fay.
Seizing the moment, Fay retaliates—shooting Vince and her escape with Jack follows rapidly. As they scramble to reclaim their buried fortune, they soon learn they’ve been tricked again, encountering Vince, still alive, just as Jack unearths the empty case.
In a frenzied moment of betrayal, Fay turns on Vince once more, sending him into the depths of the lake. As the couple attempts to drive away in Jack’s vehicle, they fall victim to another scheme, confronting law enforcement chasing them relentlessly. A tragic collision ensues, leading to a catastrophic explosion that extinguishes their lives.
Amid the chaos, Jack emerges grievously injured yet miraculously alive, rescued from the lake by two tribal members. As he is whisked away to safety, he reflects on the harrowing ordeal that claimed the lives of his companions and the ill-fated treasure that was their undoing.
