Kandaen

Vasanth is an engineer from Chennai who travels to his hometown to visit his grandfather, only to discover a marriage has been arranged for him and that the grandfather isn’t really sick. To dodge the match, he fibs that he is in love with a girl. The grandfather is eager to see the girl soon, so Vasanth heads back to Chennai, and the wheels of fate begin to turn.

At first sight, Narmada captures his heart, and he pretends to be blind so she will fall for him as well. Their bond grows, and they start dating. Narmada’s father, a police commissioner, balks at the idea of his daughter marrying a man who is supposedly blind, so the couple decide to marry at the register office without parental consent. During the proceedings, Narmada discovers that Vasanth is not actually blind. She is furious and leaves the registrar’s office, but she forgives him after he apologizes. Their engagement follows, and the news settles into a fragile happiness that both cling to.

To celebrate, Vasanth and his friends head to a bar where, in a night of revelry, he drinks and ends up in a fight with a gang that had previously misbehaved toward Narmada. The scuffle ends badly: an iron rod slams into the back of his head, injuring his optical nerves and causing him to lose his eyesight. The turning point in his life arrives with a doctor’s warning that laser treatments might restore his vision, but the operation must wait until his head wound heals, and the surgeon would have to come from London.

Discharged from the hospital, he asks the doctor to keep his new condition a secret. But tensions rise when Narmada and her father return home with her father’s friend Shankar. They make it clear that Vasanth would not have been accepted if he were blind, and the couple realize that they cannot know Vasanth’s condition for certain. Vasanth yearns to tell Narmada the truth, yet she is hurt whenever blindness is mentioned. She confesses that she is glad he was pretending, because living with a blind partner would be exceedingly difficult, and Vasanth remains silent about the accident.

A misstep occurs one day when, while crossing a road, Vasanth asks a girl for help. Narmada witnesses this and misreads it as infidelity, recalling their first encounter when he pretended to be blind. Her father takes action, Saami is arrested, and a plan forms to marry Narmada off to another suitor on the same date. She requests some time and aims to go to London to study. Saami is bailed out, and the twist of fate deepens: the London ophthalmologist’s flight is cancelled, so Vasanth, accompanied by a Chennai doctor, boards a flight to London—with Narmada aboard as well.

A further coincidence occurs when the air hostess on the flight turns out to be the same girl who had helped Vasanth earlier. She tries to warn the flight crew that he deceives girls by pretending to be blind, but the cabin staff end up telling Narmada the truth. Realizing the truth at last, she reconciles with him. The operation in London is successful, and Vasanth’s eyesight is restored. The lovers return to India to begin their life together, hopeful and ready to marry with a renewed bond.
