Kamla Ki Maut

In a crowded, lower-middle-class chawl in Mumbai, life is intimate and full of unspoken truths. A 20-year-old, unmarried Kamla Kavita Thakur cannot bear the weight of her pregnancy, and she ends her life, a tragedy that needles its way through every door and window of the building. Her death sends shockwaves through the neighborhood and pulls the curtain back on the secrets everyone keeps, especially for the Patel family who live nearby. The family’s struggles loom large as Sudhakar [Pankaj Kapur] and his wife Nirmala [Ashalata Wabgaonkar] come to grips with the fact that Kamla’s suicide was tied to a premarital pregnancy, not simply a private misfortune. Nearby, Kamla’s circle—Geeta [Roopa Ganguly] and Charu [Mrinal Kulkarni]—also study with Kamla in college and harbor their own relationships and hidden pressures, their quiet lives suddenly looked at with a different, more scrutinizing light.

As the adults in the building process this revelation, the memories begin to surface, and Sudhakar and Nirmala are pulled into their own pasts. In Nirmala’s teenage years, she found herself drawn to a tutor who was already married and uninterested in any relationship that might complicate his life. After Nirmala’s suicide attempt, her mother [Anjali Kulkarni] confronts her, and the truth gradually shifts into family plans as Nirmala’s family fixes her marriage to Sudhakar [Pankaj Kapur]. The moment becomes a turning point, and Nirmala comes to believe that such a drastic act should never be repeated by any daughter; family and life must move forward, even when the past remains hauntingly near.

In the present frame of the film, young Sudhakar meets Anju [Supriya Pathak], and a spark grows between them. They decide to marry, but Anju becomes pregnant, and Sudhakar advocates abortion before abruptly vanishing from her life. He later relocates to a new place, where he encounters Chameli [Jaya Mathur], a village girl with her own turbulent prospects. The relationship is brought to light when the couple is caught in an intimate moment by villagers and Chameli’s father [Adil Rana], who insists on a marriage that could salvage Chameli’s standing. Sudhakar agrees at first but soon withdraws, frightened by Chameli’s aggressive fiancé and the social consequences that could follow.

Soon after, Sudhakar finds a different circle with a new job and new friends. He grows close to Prakash [Akhil Mishra] and his wife Lakshmi [Dimple Arora], and they share many pleasant moments together. When Prakash leaves the city on a business trip, Sudhakar and Lakshmi become closer, a bond that is suddenly exposed when Prakash returns and walks in on them in a compromising situation. The confrontation ends badly for Sudhakar, who is beaten by Prakash. This traumatic episode leads Sudhakar to quietly assume a new family life with Nirmala, and together they raise two daughters, building a fragile, but enduring unit within the same turbulent world.

Years later, Sudhakar visits his village and discovers that Anju has also moved on—she is married and has children of her own. The chance reunion with Anju becomes a quiet reminder of what could have been, and the film uses this encounter to jog the memories that keep surfacing among the neighbors. The present-day conversations between Sudhakar and Nirmala reveal a shared reckoning: Anju, too, experienced pregnancy before marriage, but she chose a different path and built a life with her own family. Yet Kamla’s tragedy remains a stark lesson for them all.

As the film moves toward its resolution, Sudhakar confides in Nirmala that Kamla’s suicide was not a mere consequence of her pregnancy; it was a choice rooted in despair and social pressure. The story makes room for difficult questions about judgment, forgiveness, and the limits of what a community should demand from individuals who are already navigating precarious lives. It treats the past not as a ledger of sins, but as a tapestry of mistakes, regrets, and imperfect courage. Through these interwoven histories, the neighbors confront their own secrets and the increments of truth that bind them together.
