Failed filmmaker Zach Wells, [Charlie David], is asked by his friend and hotshot director Topher Shadoe to take his place as judge in the annual Keystone Film Festival, held at Zach’s alma mater, Keystone Summit University. Zach is initially reluctant, as the festival’s history looms large in his life: he won it 15 years ago, a victory that pushed him to drop out of college and chase a Hollywood dream that never fully took shape. The night before the judging, Zach heads to a gay bar where he meets a younger man, Danny Reyes, [Richard Harmon], and the two end up sharing a room where they consummate their encounter.

To his shock, the patron is a festival participant named Danny Reyes, [Richard Harmon], and he submits Judas Kiss—the same film Zach submitted years earlier. Zach suspects Topher’s elaborate joke, but the situation grows more real when the headmistress, Mrs. Blossom, dismisses his doubts. A veteran security guard named Welds offers a troubling tip: Danny, with the help of Abbey Park, cheats to improve his chances at winning. The warning suggests that Zach’s future may hinge on Danny’s success in the competition, casting a long shadow over the proceedings.

Danny strikes a relationship with Chris Wachowsky, the winner of the previous year’s festival, and as the big day approaches he is approached by Shane Lyons, the son of famous Hollywood producers and self-styled “emperor” of the college. Shane takes an active interest in Danny, even inviting him to move to his residence, regardless of the festival outcome. Chris warns Danny that Shane’s interest is strategic—tied to potential winners—and could vanish if Shane’s parents disapprove of his film. Yet Danny remains committed to Shane, even as his abusive father, Daniel Sr., [Dennis Bateman], threatens to cut him off if he goes public with the film, straining his ties to both Chris and Abbey.

On the day of the awards ceremony, Zach presents what he believes is evidence of Danny’s deception to Daniel Sr., who passes the information up to Mrs. Blossom. A tense effort ensues to convince Danny to bow out, but he refuses to yield. Welds makes a final appearance and reveals that he is, in fact, Danny—and by extension Zach—now an elderly man, collapsing the illusion Zach feared and exposing the deeper deception at play. Danny’s schemes cost him the festival win, but the judges’ broader arguments secure him a chance to perform Judas Kiss, an autobiographical piece about his abusive life following his mother’s death. He receives a form of recognition, though the personal price is the fall of his friendships with Chris and Abbey.

Later, Danny visits Zach in his apartment and shares his fears about the path ahead. Zach offers quiet counsel, reminding him that the past cannot be erased, but a new life can still be built from the lessons learned. After the festival wraps, Zach returns to his work on a rooftop, a familiar image that echoes his earlier moments. Topher Shadoe returns from business and sits beside him, and it’s revealed that Topher is really Chris Wachowsky, having reconciled with Zach after the latter’s faltering attempt to break into Hollywood.
