Making Love (1982) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Making Love (1982), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Zack Elliot is a successful young oncologist in the Los Angeles area, married to Claire, an equally successful television network executive, during the early 1980s. They first met in college, have been married for eight years, and are generally happy in their relationship, sharing a love for Gilbert and Sullivan and the poetry of Rupert Brooke, introduced by their elderly former neighbor, Winnie Bates. Intent on starting a family, the couple buys a big house.

Unknown to Claire, Zack has been wrestling with attractions to men. He begins to pick up men in his car and frequents gay bars in West Hollywood during lunch hours, though he does not follow through sexually. His path changes when he meets Bart McGuire, an openly gay novelist who leads a hedonistic single life, flitting between lovers, clubs, and occasional drugs. Zack and Bart are mutually attracted, though neither fully acknowledges it aloud, sharing meals and conversations that hint at a deeper connection than Zack has allowed himself before.

One evening Zack asks Bart on a dinner date and lies to Claire about needing to work late. At Bart’s house, Zack confronts a fragment of his own identity, realizing he is not yet ready to label himself, calling himself “curious.” They go to bed, and Zack longs to stay, but Bart—averse to commitment—brushes him off. Angered, Zack leaves but then challenges Bart’s fear of intimacy by pressing him about his past. Bart agrees to meet again the following weekend.

Back home, Claire grows worried about the widening rift and asks for a year-long leave, which is declined; she instead gets a promotion and a weekend trip to New York City. Zack uses the trip to spend more time with Bart, and the two fall into arguments about honesty: Zack accuses Bart of avoiding the truth, while Bart accuses Zack of failing to be honest about his sexuality. That night, Zack musters his courage and tells Bart that he loves him; the next morning, Bart recoils, unsure of whether he can offer the commitment Zack seeks.

Gradually, Bart recognizes his feelings but remains unsure about a future together. He is last seen in bars, cruising for connection but still avoiding a full commitment that would require change.

Claire returns and Zack finally confesses his love for other men. She reacts with a mix of hurt and understanding, ultimately accepting that he cannot live a lie. Zack explains he has a job prospect in New York working with cancer patients, and the two agree to divorce rather than force a reconciliation built on deception.

A few years later, Winnie Bates dies, marking a turn in both their lives. Zack has moved to New York and is in a committed relationship with another man, an investment banker named Ken, while Claire has remarried an architect and has a young son named Rupert. At Winnie’s funeral, they meet briefly, exchange smiles, and acknowledge that each has found happiness in their own paths. The film closes with the two of them reflecting on their separate lives and feeling grateful for each other’s contentment.

Throughout the film, Bart and Claire frequently break the fourth wall, delivering mini-monologues to the audience that reveal their personal thoughts and the themes of honesty, identity, and self-acceptance that thread through the scenes.
