John Lawrence John Lawrence is a returning GI whose reunion with Mary McKinley Mary McKinley is quickly complicated by an even bigger surprise: John has arrived with Lilly Herbish Lilly Herbish, an English war bride he brought to the U.S. as a temporary solution. His plan is to take Lilly to Reno to divorce her so she can marry her true love, John’s old friend Fred Taylor Fred Taylor. The situation is further tangled by the sudden arrival of Mary’s parents, Senator James McKinley Sen. James McKinley and his wife Phyllis McKinley Phyllis McKinley, who push for a wedding right away.

When John asks for his father-in-law’s blessing to marry Mary, the senator insists on speed, setting off a chain of revelations. John learns that Fred is already married and that his wife is expecting a baby, throwing the Reno plan into doubt. To salvage the engagement, the two men hatch a scheme: Fred funds a ruse where a former lieutenant, Victor O’Leary Lt. Victor O’Leary, pretends to issue orders that force John to leave for Reno on some Army business.

The next day, Mary, overwhelmed by the prospect of a rushed wedding, begs her father to use his political leverage to pull John out of the assignment. When John refuses any special treatment, Mary departs with her parents, leaving the door open for the truth to surface. Lilly arrives and discovers that Fred is already married; Mary, desperate to win John back, again appeals to General Biddle Gen. Biddle for intervention, but John remains steadfast in rejecting any outside influence.

As the truth comes out, Mary confronts the possibility that John may not truly love her, and she breaks off the engagement. John then confronts the full extent of the ruse. Lilly finally reveals a hidden truth: she was married to Victor, but had received a letter from his mother claiming that he had died of double pneumonia. In truth, Victor is alive but reluctant and inebriated, and when he is reunited with Lilly, it becomes clear that Lilly’s marriage to John was invalid. With that obstacle removed, Victor is free to wed Mary, sealing the path for a future that could finally bring John and Mary together under more honest circumstances.
