Caught in the Draft

Don Bolton, a vain movie star who fears being drafted into the military, suffers an aversion to loud noises — even fake gunshots on the set — and doubts he could endure a day of training. On a visit to the studio, Col. Peter Fairbanks arrives as a technical consultant for a war film and brings his beautiful daughter with him, Antoinette ‘Tony’ Fairbanks. Don schemes to marry the colonel’s daughter to dodge the draft, a plan that hinges on his belief that youth and status can shield him from service. After proposing, however, he learns that draft eligibility ends at 31, and at 32 he must retract his proposal. A disgusted Tony accuses him of cowardice, setting up a tense initial conflict between desire and duty.

A few weeks later, Don realizes he’s genuinely in love with Tony. To win her over, he stages a fake enlistment, hoping heroism will win her heart. But the ruse spirals out of control, and before he knows it, Don is in the Army—along with his loyal assistant Bert Sparks and his manager Steve Riggs. At the training camp, the formidable Col. Peter Fairbanks serves as the commanding officer, laying down a challenge: if Don ever earns a promotion to corporal, he will be permitted to marry Tony. The trio faces the rough-and-tumble realities of basic life in uniform, enduring long hours and heavy KP duty as they stumble through military routines.

When the group is transferred to a distant base, a camp-wide war game is organized to test their teamwork and nerve. Bert quietly engineers a sly modification of the field signposts to help his team gain the upper hand, a decision that backfires dramatically. The altered routes mislead the opposing side straight into a live artillery range, turning a playful exercise into a dangerous misstep. Amid the chaos, Don confronts his fear of noise head-on, springing into action to rescue a crew of players caught in the dangerous crossfire. He also comes to Tony’s aid, who happens to be observing the games from horseback, and their bond deepens under pressure.
