In 1901, a man enters a secluded forest shack to confront a patient, waiting jinn. He begins to recite an Arabic prayer, hoping to forge a protective layer as he edges closer to the captive foe. His sole request is simple and dangerous: the release of a girl held hostage by the jinn. But the jinn refuses to answer, launching a brutal assault. After a fierce struggle, the man splashes holy water on the jinn, who then swears vengeance. The jinn declares that he will slaughter every member of the man’s bloodline, spanning generations to come.

More than a century later, in Michigan, Shawn and Jasmine are a devoted couple enjoying ordinary life until a mysterious delivery arrives: a birthday note and a VHS tape. The tape carries a message from Shawn’s father, warning that dark forces may begin to press in and urging Shawn to seek out helpers who can prepare him to face the unknown threat. The message makes something painfully clear: if the tape has reached Shawn, his father has failed to stop the forces and Shawn will have to prevail to safeguard his family. The couple’s hopes for stability are shaken when Shawn reveals plans for a promotion at work and the possibility of starting a family; Jasmine, however, confides that she cannot have children, a revelation that unsettles Shawn.

When Shawn returns home, he finds the house unnervingly altered—furniture stacked and Jasmine missing. A tense search leads to a distressing discovery: Jasmine reappears, seemingly unharmed, though strange occurrences continue to mount. The couple meets Father Westhoff and Gabriel, who explain the existence of jinn and their perilous influence. Shawn remains skeptical, but Father Westhoff presses him to seek out his adoptive parents, and the truth of the elder Westhoff’s tale begins to align with what Shawn’s own family has endured. The story’s weight intensifies as the two men are suddenly attacked by an unseen force that abducts Jasmine once more.

Shawn and Gabriel then set out to uncover the past by visiting Ali, Shawn’s estranged uncle. Ali, tied to the same bloodline, has endured torment at the hands of the jinn and has fallen into madness. Through a display of supernatural power, Ali reveals that Jasmine is pregnant, changing the stakes entirely. He warns that to save himself and his family, Shawn must endure and conquer the Chilla—a brutal test that is physical, mental, and spiritual in nature. The danger grows as the jinn appears to be watching their every move. In the ensuing struggle, Gabriel sacrifices himself to shield Shawn, and it is revealed that Gabriel himself is a jinn who dies in the effort.

With Father Westhoff as the sole remaining guide, Shawn learns the reasons the jinn are pursuing him and his family. Westhoff sends him on a dangerous quest to master the knowledge needed to defeat the supernatural threat. Shawn arranges a confrontation at a predetermined location, drawing the jinn into the field where the final confrontation will unfold. The jinns attempt a series of physical tortures and cunning mental deceptions, but Shawn endures the Chilla and presses on to face the principal jinn—one linked to the ancient clash of his great-grandfather over a century earlier. Ali fights by his side as the two confront a foe that seems to toy with them, toying with time and fear itself.

Ultimately, Shawn defeats the main jinn. Out of several dimensions, other jinns arrive, seeking peace, but Shawn refuses to yield to them, killing one as a warning to the rest. Father Westhoff then reveals that Jasmine is safe in a church, and that Gabriel—the revived one—is with her. After the battle, a year passes and the trio—Shawn, Jasmine, and Ali—live together with a newborn son. At their apartment, a quiet, almost magical moment occurs when the baby’s pacifier drops to the floor and, without being touched, slides into the child’s mouth. The adults exchange a knowing glance: the child is endowed with the power to defeat the jinn once and for all, and the future holds a fragile, hard-won hope.
