Mildred dies of cancer in 1940, leaving eight-year-old James to cope with the loss. Winton does not attend the funeral, and James is sent on a train to Fairmount carrying her coffin. This event marks the start of James's long separation from his father.

James grows up on a farm in Fairmount after the family break, raised by his aunt and uncle as his father remains emotionally distant. The years pass with little contact from Winton, fueling James's curiosity about his father's decisions. He learns to navigate life apart from his father.

In June 1949, James moves back to Santa Monica after high school and learns that Winton has remarried. The reunion is emotionally fraught, and James resolves to pursue acting rather than seek his father's approval. The new start shifts his aspirations toward the arts.

James decides to become an actor and enrolls in acting classes taught by James Whitmore. Whitmore is impressed by his natural talent and encourages him to pursue opportunities in performance. This marks the beginning of his professional artistic journey.

In September 1951, James relocates to New York City to pursue acting more seriously. He befriends Martin Landau, begins a romance with Christine White, and earns acceptance into the prestigious Actors Studio. New York becomes the proving ground for his craft.

James falls for Pier Angeli while she works nearby on The Silver Chalice. Despite Pier's mother's objections, they buy a beach house and begin living together, signaling a glamorous yet scrutinized personal life.

Nicholas Ray casts him in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), boosting his fame. The East of Eden premiere angers Warner Bros. because James does not attend, and executives worry about how his personal life could affect his career.

James signs a one-million-dollar contract with Warner Bros. and is cast in Giant (1956). His mental strain deepens as he clashes with director George Stevens, highlighting growing tensions on set.

Frustration leads James to seek the truth about his father’s disinterest, and Winton reveals that his real father was another man. After this revelation, he rediscovers joy and forms a friendlier rapport with Stevens, but his life is cut short in a car crash. En route to Indiana, Winton sits beside James's coffin on a train, a final, haunting image of their fractured relationship.
