Rick Dicker, Bud Luckey, a government agent tasked with keeping superheroes’ identities under wraps, sits down to interview Kari McKeen about the day she babysat Jack-Jack Parr, the youngest member of a legendary superfamily.
In Kari’s memory, a tense call from Helen—reluctant and anxious about leaving Kari in charge—begins the tale. Kari, trying to project confidence, reassures Helen that she’s more than capable of handling Jack-Jack, but the moment is interrupted when Helen’s jet is suddenly fired upon. With danger in the air, Kari assumes nothing is wrong and focuses on the baby, asking him if he’s ready for some “neurological stimulation.” She starts with the third movement, the Rondo alla Turca, from Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 11, and that choice triggers something inside Jack-Jack: a new, latent set of powers begins to emerge.
What follows is a string of uncanny, almost magical events. Jack-Jack vanishes from Kari’s sight, only to reappear at the kitchen table, then calmly sip from a bottle in the fridge. When a playful touch becomes perilous, Kari’s nerves tighten as Jack-Jack floats up toward the ceiling, milk spraying across Kari’s face. She places him in a playpen, turning it upside-down to keep him from floating away, and frantically phones Helen again. Jack-Jack’s curiosity propels him through the environment: he slips through the floor into the laundry room and then passes through walls, babbling happily as Kari pursues him through the chaos.
Back upstairs, Kari attempts to calm the infant in the playroom by tying him to a barbell and showing him flashcards. The routine works until a card depicting a campfire sparks a dangerous transformation—Jack-Jack bursts into flame. Terrified, Kari grabs him with tongs and rushes to the bathroom, where she plunges him into a sink of water to douse the flames. The day leaves Kari exhausted and on the edge, yet she discovers a troubling, precognitive sense for countering Jack-Jack’s spontaneous outbursts.
The next morning brings a knock at the door and the arrival of a man who introduces himself as Syndrome, Jason Lee in the role. Kari misreads him as a relief babysitter and questions what the “S” on his costume stands for. Syndrome explains that the letter stands for “Sitter”—a wry joke about avoiding the label “Babysitter,” which would risk earning the nickname “BS” on a uniform and being taken seriously by parents.
During the interview, Dicker expresses disbelief that Kari could have trusted Syndrome enough to leave a baby in his care. Kari defends her actions, insisting she wasn’t in a clear state of mind at the time, and that the infant had not been acting normally. She reveals that she told her parents about the incident, only to have them doubt her memory and treat it as a joke. As Kari longs to forget the chaotic episode, Dicker reassures her that she will, in fact, forget—activating a device that erases her memory of the events.
In the end, the debriefing leaves a haunting impression: a caregiver’s fragile grip on reality, a baby’s untamed potential, and a government’s quiet insistence that sometimes truth must be erased to preserve order. The story lingers with the sense that the Parr family’s extraordinary world continues to exist just beneath the surface, awaiting the moment when memory, power, and responsibility collide once more.
