In 1949, Wing Chun master Ip Man and his family relocate to Hong Kong, fleeing from the turmoil of Japanese-occupied Foshan. This pivotal move marks the beginning of their struggle to adapt to a new environment as they seek a stable life.

In 1950, Ip Man attempts to open a martial arts school to share his Wing Chun expertise and earn a living. Despite his skills, he faces challenges in attracting students due to his unknown reputation in the city.

Young fighter Wong Shun Leung appears and challenges Ip Man to a duel. After being easily defeated, Wong returns with friends for revenge, but Ip defeats them as well, impressing Wong who decides to become his student.

While shopping at the market, Ip encounters Chow Ching-chuen, a friend from the past, who is now mentally impaired after being shot by Japanese soldiers for aiding Ip. This encounter highlights the personal toll of war on relationships.

Wong Shun Leung is ambushed by the Hung Ga students while promoting Ip's school. After defeating one of the thugs in a fight, Wong is taken hostage by his gang, leading Ip to intervene and rescue him.

Ip and Wong are caught in a brawl with Hung Ga students trying to rescue Wong. Jin Shanzhao, a former bandit, intervenes, helping Ip and Wong escape from the overwhelming mob.

Hung Chun-nam, the leader of martial arts schools, informs Ip that he must pass a ceremony to establish his school's legitimacy. Ip successfully defeats his first two opponents but ends in a draw against Hung, gaining him certain respect.

After refusing to pay protection money, Ip faces harassment from Hung Chun-nam's students outside his school. This leads to a violent street fight, and eventually, Ip's landlady forces him to vacate the property.

At a martial arts exhibition, Hung Chun-nam is killed by the boxer Taylor 'The Twister' Miller after a brutal match. This shocking event ignites anger within the Chinese community, affecting Ip's standing in the martial arts world.

After learning about Hung’s death, Ip Man publicly challenges Twister to a fight to defend Chinese honor. This sets the stage for a significant confrontation, reflecting the tension between different martial arts cultures.

During the match, Ip struggles initially due to unfamiliarity with Western boxing rules, but soon adapts his Wing Chun techniques. After facing corruption from the officials, he meticulously plans his attacks to overcome Twister.

Ip emerges victorious after defeating Twister, an achievement celebrated by the Chinese community. He uses his platform to promote unity and respect among different cultures, calling for mutual understanding.

Following Ip's victory, corrupt officer Wallace is arrested for his misdeeds, leading to a brief restoration of integrity within the law enforcement community. This moment signifies a turn against oppression.

Ip returns home to meet his newborn son, Ip Ching. This personal joy contrasts with the previous turmoil faced by the family, symbolizing hope and new beginnings.

Some time later, Ip Man meets a young boy named Bruce Lee who expresses his desire to learn Wing Chun. Amused by Bruce's enthusiasm, Ip encourages him to return when he is older, hinting at Bruce's future as a martial artist.
