Chyna accompanies Laura Templeton to her family's rural Washington state home for Thanksgiving. A serial killer, Edgler Vess, storms the house and kills Laura's relatives as Chyna hides inside the killer's RV parked on the property. The terror begins with a brutal slaughter that will force Chyna to flee for her life.

Chyna seizes an opportunity at a gas station to escape and plead with the attendants to call the police. She warns of a man holding hostages, including Ariel, but the immediate contact is interrupted as danger closes in. Her attempt to seek help marks the first step in a cat-and-mouse chase with Vess.

Vess returns to the gas station and torments the two workers before brutally killing them with a shotgun. The violence escalates quickly as Chyna remains hidden and the danger grows closer. The attack confirms Vess's ruthless control over the situation.

Chyna learns that Ariel is being held in a fortified basement and resolves to save her. She seizes one of the shopkeepers' cars and begins following Vess back toward his home. The plan sets Chyna on a dangerous path deeper into Vess's territory.

On the road, Chyna encounters Miriam, briefly enlisting her help and asking her to call the police. Miriam, wary and skeptical, continues on her own course. The encounter foreshadows the growing misunderstandings and danger surrounding the pursuit.

Miriam pulls into a gas station later and finds the shopkeepers' bodies, realizing that Chyna's story may be true. She phones the police in a frantic plea to save Chyna and Ariel. The police initially dismiss the warning, fueling the tension.

Back at the police, Trevaine recalls the missing Ariel name and begins to investigate the case. His involvement introduces a counterpoint to Chyna's peril and a growing official search for Ariel. The effort binds the threads of the story more tightly to the authorities.

Chyna's car runs out of gasoline on the road, forcing Vess to stop. She slips into his RV and hides, unintentionally leaving footprints that may betray her presence. This moment marks a shift from flight to a perilous game of hide-and-seek.

Vess suspects another intruder and kills Miriam when she tries to intervene and help Chyna. Her death eliminates a potential ally and raises the stakes for Chyna's survival. The road to Ariel's rescue grows even more perilous.

Chyna and Ariel arrive at Vess's house and Chyna attempts to free Ariel from the fortified room. Vess overpowers and subdues her, turning the rescue mission into a trap. The cycle of captivity deepens as Chyna faces Vess's psychological games.

In captivity, Chyna endures a series of conversations with Vess that reveal his obsession with intensity and his nihilistic worldview. He outlines a plan to torture Ariel and suggests a merciful death for Chyna if she cooperates. The dialogue probes questions about God, good, and evil.

Vess leaves Chyna chained as he goes to work after Thanksgiving, and a captive escapes through a drain hatch only to be mauled by his dogs. The brutal death underscores the danger of any escape. Chyna begins to strategize her own move to freedom as the window narrows.

Chyna frees herself, dresses in dog-training gear, and attempts to flee with Ariel in Vess's RV. An alarm triggers, forcing Vess to return earlier than expected. The escape plan is perilously compromised at the last moment.

As police close in, it is revealed that Vess is the sheriff and he steps out of an unmarked vehicle, opening fire on the pursuing Trevaine. Trevaine is killed, and Chyna and Ariel manage to escape back to the house. The confrontation culminates in Chyna's struggle to end Vess's threat.

Chyna sets Vess on fire and confines him in Ariel's old room, watching him burn to death. In the aftermath, Chyna visits Ariel in a psychiatric hospital but is denied custody; Ariel speaks the name Badger, hinting at a hopeful bond and eventual custody. The story closes with a sense of fragile relief and possible future reconciliation.
