In 1912, director Albert Jasset turned from fantasy to realism, creating the first of two Éclair social dramas based on Émile Zola. For Au pays des ténèbres, adapted from Germinal, he shot on location in Charleroi, Belgium, and painstakingly rebuilt the mining galleries in studio, updating the story to contemporary times and using film to capture modern reality.
