Feuillade’s obscure Vendémiaire abandons his typical ‘fantastic realism’ for a stark French realism. Divided into four chapters, the film first suggests a simple story of wine harvest, but it soon serves as an allegory for France’s culture and land. Set on the Castelviel estate in September 1918, villagers, unaware that the war is ending, labor through the grape harvest, urging defense of the nation’s spirit and soil.
