Chad and Howard arrive in an undisclosed Midwestern city for their assignment at a remote branch office. They meet at the airport, bonding over shared meals and drinks while discussing their troubled romantic histories.

Motivated by their bitter experiences with women, Chad devises a cruel plan to simultaneously woo and then abandon a vulnerable woman. Howard, despite his passive nature, reluctantly agrees to participate in the scheme, leading them down a dark path.

Chad and Howard set their sights on Christine, a deaf colleague who deals with self-doubt and prefers visual cues over verbal communication. They both invite her out, and feeling lonely, Christine accepts their offers.

Both men begin dating Christine, maintaining the facade of genuine affection while scamming her emotionally. The deception deepens as Christine starts feeling attached to both of them.

At work, a crucial fax that Chad was supposed to send goes missing, leading to a series of mistakes that impact Howard's performance. As a result, Howard faces demotion while Chad cunningly shifts the blame onto him.

As their fake relationships unfold, Chad becomes intimate with Christine, who begins to fall for him genuinely. This complicates their deceitful plot as real feelings start to emerge amidst the manipulation.

Christine learns about the scheme when she tells Howard about her feelings for Chad. Faced with disbelief and desperation, Howard reveals the deceitful plot, leading to a confrontation with Chad.

Chad reveals that despite losing his girlfriend, Suzanne, she is actually still at his apartment, asleep. He brazenly acknowledges that his actions were executed without remorse, proudly stating he harmed Christine 'because he could.'

Howard is stunned by Chad's lack of empathy and realization of how he was exploited for Chad's benefit. Enraged, he leaves Chad's apartment, grappling with the emotional fallout of their treacherous scheme.

Returning to the obscurity of the nameless city, Howard spots Christine working at a local bank. As he approaches her, she pointedly ignores him, highlighting the emotional rift caused by their actions.

Desperately, Howard calls out for Christine, begging her to listen. However, his pleas fall on deaf ears, encapsulating the destructive consequences of their manipulative behavior and the irreversible damage done.
