In 37 BC, young Liburnian Volsus is conscripted by a Roman detachment to collect taxes. His mission quickly turns when he meets fierce Illyrian tribes who resist subjugation. Through his eyes we glimpse their archaic, emotionally charged society—its harsh laws, rituals and communal bonds—revealing a world that, though labeled barbaric, mirrors our own in its struggles and values.
