After surviving the trenches of World I, Jean Diaz is so horrified that he abandons love and pleasure, devoting himself to scientific work to invent a device that could prevent future wars. Believing he has succeeded, he watches the government hijack his creation, allowing Europe to drift inexorably toward World II. In a final act of desperation, Diaz calls upon the spirits of the fallen French soldiers, forcing them to rise as a silent, accusing testament to the tragedy of war.
