An alien from the planet Lorien, Alex Pettyfer, is sent to Earth as a child alongside eight others in a desperate bid to escape the tyranny of the invading Mogadorians, who have ravaged their home world. He is under the watchful protection of his Warrior/Guardian, Timothy Olyphant, who helps him navigate his new life while nurturing the superpowers he has developed from his extraterrestrial origins, which include enhanced strength, speed, agility, telekinesis, and the ability to generate light from his hands, among others.
However, the tranquility of his new existence is shattered when the Mogadorians, led by the ruthless Commander (Kevin Durand), discover the location of the nine surviving Loriens. In a perilous twist of fate, these Loriens can only be eliminated in a specific order, and with three already dead, John knows he must stay under the radar to avert his demise as Number Four.
Seeking refuge, John and Henri relocate from Florida to Paradise, Ohio, where John finds camaraderie in conspiracy theorist Sam Goode (Callan McAuliffe) and becomes enamored with amateur photographer Sarah Hart (Dianna Agron). Their high school life takes a turbulent turn as they face bullying from Sarah’s ex-boyfriend, the athlete Mark James ([Jake Abel]), who tries to assert his dominance over both John and Sam.
Amidst this chaos, Henri cherishes a mysterious box gifted by John’s father during their escape. He vows to pass it on to John when the moment is right. Henri discloses that John was chosen by Lorien to be a guardian, explaining the extraordinary abilities he possesses, which are the result of his parents’ lineage.
As Sam divulges the backstory of his own father’s mysterious disappearance—linked to his conspiracy theories about alien activity—Henri begins investigating old reports regarding Sam’s dad. His inquiries lead him to the abandoned steel plant connected to Sam’s father, where Henri discovers clues that deepen the intrigue.
During a spring carnival, the tension escalates when Mark and his gang capture John and Sarah, believing them to be an item. In the ensuing confrontation, John’s burgeoning powers emerge, allowing him to defend himself and rescue Sarah, prompting Sam to learn the truth about John’s origins. Shortly after, they are targeted by the local authorities, who are led by Mark’s father, the sheriff. Tension mounts as they face scrutiny for their unusual abilities.
Though Henri knows the growing number of people who suspect them is dangerous, John is torn between his mission and his feelings for Sarah. After a fierce confrontation with Henri, who wants to protect him, John learns about his higher purpose in the fight against the Mogadorians. Henri’s familial legacy becomes a tangible connection as he passes on John’s father’s box to him.
As the Mogadorians intensify their search, another Lorien named Number Six ([Jake Abel]) refuses to hide any longer after her Guardian’s death and seeks revenge instead. The stakes rise dramatically when the Mogadorians employ deception to trap Henri. When John and Sam attempt to rescue him, they engage in a fierce battle against the Mogadorians, but they lose Henri, who is mortally injured.
With heartache, John and Sam escape with valuable artifacts, including a blue rock that serves as a tracking device, mirroring one held by Sam’s father, who vanished during his own alien-hunting escapades in Mexico. Meanwhile, as John tries to make amends with Sarah at a party, they become entrapped in a web of deceit woven by the Mogadorians, who frame them for their connections to the conspiracy theorists.
As the conflict intensifies, the Commander arrives, determined to corner John. An epic showdown ensues at the high school, where John, Sarah, and Sam are ambushed. Just as hope dwindles, Number Six steps in, alongside John’s loyal companion, Bernie Kosar, who reveals himself as a Chimera sent to protect John. Together, they confront the Commander and his monstrous allies, ultimately outsmarting and defeating them in a climactic battle.
The next day marks a new chapter as John, Number Six, Sam, and Bernie Kosar unite their blue rocks, successfully pinpointing the locations of the remaining Loriens. With newfound purpose, they set off to locate their kindred spirits, preparing to stand together against the encroaching threat of the Mogadorians, all while leaving Sarah and a reformed Mark behind as allies in this ongoing battle.
