Dan Geraldo, a determined reporter on the hunt for a great story, finds himself in the intriguing town of Chiquito, located in the vibrant land of Palombia. Initially, he believes his biggest scoop will be nothing more than an interview with the indigenous Paya tribes. However, his journey takes a curious turn when he teams up with the quirky and down-on-his-luck veterinarian and tour guide, Pablito Camaron, who is often ridiculed by his own children for his wild tales. The pair soon learn about the captivating legend of the Marsupilami, a rare and mythical creature said to dwell within the lush Palombian rainforest.
In an unexpected twist of fate, an elderly botanist named Hermoso, aged 80, stumbles upon a stunningly rare orchid that the Marsupilami uses to nurture its eggs. Through an unlikely series of events, Hermoso is able to distill the essence of this orchid, which, when consumed, inexplicably transforms him back into his youthful self. With the assistance of Caporal, an officer in the Palombian Army, Hermoso executes a coup, imprisoning the current dictator, Général Pochero, who has an unusual obsession with the music of Celine Dion. Hermoso's ambition is to capture the elusive Marsupilami, who had earlier taken his stolen orchid samples, believing it could procure more of these rare flowers for him.
As Dan and Pablito trek through the thick jungles, they fall into the hands of the Paya. Inside their sacred temple, they come face to face with the enchanting Queen Paya, who delivers a prophecy about the Marsupilami, declaring it a protector of the jungle under threat from "the man with two faces." Though they are eventually released, Dan and Pablito's relationship deteriorates over a heated argument after Dan reveals he is not compensating Pablito for his help.
As fate would have it, Pablito intersects with the Marsupilami, discovering that it has a companion and a nest of eggs. Chaos ensues when Palombian soldiers, led by Caporal, invade the nest, and the Marsupilami is subdued by a tranquilizer dart. Meanwhile, Hermoso, having crowned himself as General, uncovers the eggs while on the hunt for more orchids. In an unfortunate collision, Pablito and Dan knock each other out, leading to a precarious situation where they find themselves imprisoned and eventually freed by General Pochero using a secret escape route at the palace.
In a comedic endeavor, Pochero disguises himself in women's clothing to distract the soldiers, granting Dan and Pablito the opportunity to flee with the precious orchids and eggs in a lavish limousine. Caporal, upon realizing the deception, is knocked out by the Marsupilami, who takes off in a frenzy after the eggs. As Hermoso angrily pursues the trio in a military jeep, Dan makes his way to the television station, where he begins to reveal the existence of Marsupilami to the public. However, Pablito's original videotape showcasing the creature is accidentally erased, leading to a frantic attempt to salvage the situation.
At the climax of the story, the Marsupilami miraculously makes an appearance live on air. In a moment of chaos, Hermoso crashes through the television studio in a misguided effort to reclaim the eggs, ultimately consuming too much of his rejuvenating potion. This unfortunate event results in him regressing to an infant state just as Pablito receives forgiveness from his children. In the end, the Marsupilami, along with its newly hatched babies, is joyfully returned to its rightful home in the jungle, establishing a heartwarming conclusion to this wild adventure.
