After a heated argument with Julius Caesar over his disbelief in the Egyptian people’s potential, Queen Cleopatra, Micheline Dax, bets that she can have a magnificent palace built in Alexandria within three months. She assigns the task to her best architect Numerobis, warning him that failure will mean the crocodiles’ jaws and a fate worse than defeat, while success will bring him gold and glory. Daunted yet determined, Numerobis heads to Gaul seeking help from the famous druid Panoramix.

Panoramix returns to Egypt with Numerobis, accompanied by Asterix, Roger Carel, and Obelix, Jacques Morel, who insist that Idefix join the voyage despite Asterix’s protests. On the voyage, Numerobis’ skills are put to the test when the trio encounters a pirate ship; Asterix and Obelix board the pirates, and after a lopsided fight they scuttle the ship, proving the Gauls’ prowess and their stubborn determination to keep the project on track.

Back in Egypt, it becomes clear that Numerobis isn’t a gifted architect, and his rival Amonbofis seizes the moment, proposing they collaborate to build Caesar’s palace on time and share the spoils. Numerobis refuses, and Amonbofis swears vengeance, especially after injuries he suffers during a negotiation over Numerobis’ apparently flawed design that later collapses.

Amonbofis then stirs up trouble among the workers, convincing them they’re being exploited. Panoramix’s magic potion keeps the labor going, allowing the Gauls to push forward even as supplies dwindle. When the stone shipments run dry, the bribed supplier dumps the next batch into the Nile, forcing the Gauls to escort a fresh fleet to Alexandria. En route, a visit to the Pyramids at Giza is interrupted by Krukhut, a scheming sidekick who poses as a guide and leads them astray. The Gauls lose their way in a maze, but Idefix helps them find their path again, and they press on with renewed resolve.

To derail the project further, Amonbofis and Krukhut hire pirates to attack the returning fleet. The repeated pirate assaults do little to dampen Obelix’s spirits, even as the danger heightens. In a final bid to stop the Gauls, Amonbofis frames them for attempting to poison Cleopatra with a poisoned cake. The Gauls are thrown into the dungeon after Cleopatra’s taster falls ill, but Panoramix carries an antidote and enables them to eat the rest of the cake, proving the danger harmless and curing the taster. They are pardoned, and Amonbofis and Krukhut are sentenced to work for Numerobis as laborers.

Caesar, fearing a loss of face, sends a spy to infiltrate the site and orders three mercenaries to kidnap Panoramix and topple the cauldron. One mercenary drinks the potion, overpowers the other two, and is captured by Asterix and Obelix. Panoramix is delivered to Caesar and imprisoned, but the Gauls free him from captivity. Caesar then besieges the unfinished palace and bombards it with boulders, only to have Cleopatra intervene, prompting Caesar to lift the siege and accept the progress that’s been made.

In the end, the palace is completed on schedule, Numerobis is honored for his work, and the Gauls are escorted home aboard Cleopatra’s luxury ship, their triumph complete as the project reaches its shimmering finish.
