What Happens at the End of HIM?

How HIM (2021) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The climax of Him sees the protagonist, Cam, violently rejecting the dark destiny that has been engineered for him. Throughout the film, Cam is groomed to replace the legendary quarterback Isaiah, but the price of this succession is his very humanity. In the final moments, faced with a contract that would turn him into a commodity for a cabal of wealthy owners, Cam refuses to sign his life away. Instead of accepting the role of the new "GOAT," he fights back, killing the trainer and slaughtering the owners who view him as nothing more than an asset. This bloody rebellion is not just an escape for Cam, but a definitive destruction of the cycle that sought to consume him.

The dynamic between Cam and Isaiah provides the emotional core of this resolution. Isaiah represents the corrosive nature of pure ambition, having sacrificed his morality—and eventually his life—to maintain his status as the "greatest." In contrast, Cam’s journey has been defined by his struggle to maintain his connections to family and faith. When Cam ultimately kills Isaiah, the legend dies with a smile, satisfied that his legacy has been passed to a worthy successor. However, Cam subverts this expectation; he does not kill to inherit Isaiah's power, but to reclaim his own agency. By refusing to become a "mascot" for the elite, Cam proves that he possesses the necessary killer instinct, but uses it to protect his soul rather than sell it.

Beneath the surface-level violence, the ending offers a sharp critique of the sports industry and the exploitation of athletes. The true villains are revealed to be the team owners, a cabal that profits from the physical sacrifices of players, treating them like game to be hunted. This dynamic creates a powerful metaphor for the way young athletes, particularly minorities, are chewed up by a system designed to enrich the wealthy. The revelation that Cam’s own father had previously struck a deal with these men adds a tragic layer to the story, showing that Cam was pushed into this world before he was even born. By breaking the contract and slaughtering the architects of the system, Cam severs the generational chains that bound him.

The film closes on a note of catharsis and defiance. Director Justin Tipping framed this violent uprising as a hopeful conclusion, emphasizing that the "curse" of exploitation can end if one has the courage to refuse the devil’s bargain. Cam emerges from the ordeal not as the greatest player in the record books, but as the true hero of the narrative—the one who was strong enough to say no. The final image of red, white, and blue smoke hanging over the carnage underscores the film's thematic stance: in a society that turns athletes into sacrificial lambs, true victory is found in destroying the altar itself.
