The film opens in Jackson, Kentucky in 1997, where J.D. reflects on his teenage years. He spends time visiting family alongside his grandparents and mother, Bev, before they return home to Ohio.

Fourteen years later, J.D. attends Yale University, juggling three jobs while dating Usha, who has an internship in Washington D.C. He aspires to secure an internship for himself, trying to network at various events.

During an important interview week, J.D. receives a distressing call from his sister, Lindsay. She informs him that their mother, Bev, has overdosed on heroin and is in the hospital, leaving Lindsay overwhelmed with her own responsibilities.

As J.D. contemplates returning home, he is besieged by memories of his troubled childhood. He recalls his mother's emotional instability and his own struggles, including the conflict surrounding his passion for collecting Joe Montana cards.

While driving, Bev expresses her desire to move in with her boyfriend, prompting erratic driving behavior. The situation escalates when she violently attacks J.D., leading him to escape the car and call the police, who arrest her.

In 2011, J.D. makes the decision to drive to Ohio, feeling the weight of his family's struggles. This is juxtaposed with his memories of being picked up by his grandparents during his troubled childhood.

Upon arriving at the hospital in 2011, J.D. finds his mother yelling at the nurse. He learns that Bev will be discharged due to lack of health insurance, coinciding with an important job interview he just received.

The film highlights Bev's ongoing issues with drug addiction, including her job loss after stealing drugs. Her erratic behavior escalates following the death of her father, showcasing the impact of substance abuse on the family.

In 1997, after their grandfather dies, the complications of family life increase. J.D., Lindsey, and Bev move in with Ken, but Bev's drug use continues and leads to further family distress.

Amidst home turmoil, J.D. begins acting out with his step-brother Travis and his friends. Their reckless behavior culminates in vandalism and wrecking a car, highlighting J.D.'s struggles during these years.

In 1997, J.D.'s grandmother steps in to offer stability, taking him into her home. Under her care, he finds guidance and support that help him succeed academically and steer away from trouble.

As he matures, J.D. enlists in the Marines. Following his service and the heartbreaking loss of his grandmother, he utilizes the G.I. Bill to further his education, paving the way for a brighter future.

In 2011, J.D. and Lindsay seek a rehabilitation center for Bev, hoping to break the cycle of addiction. However, despite J.D.'s financial support for her recovery, Bev refuses to commit once again, highlighting her struggles.

After dealing with his mother's issues in Ohio, J.D. ensures Bev has a meal and a place to stay before heading back to Yale. He is determined to make it to his job interview, balancing family responsibilities with personal ambitions.
