After losing their jobs in New York, Tom and Amanda Burke move to Arizona, where Tom takes a managerial role at a small children’s clothing company. Their new boss, Sirius Lovelin, is obsessed with the traditional American family and automatically assumes Amanda is a housewife, even though the couple has no children. To avoid offending him, they “hire” two street‑wise kids they meet, whose witty but impertinent behavior quickly entangles the Burkes in a lie they struggle to sustain.
