Cliff Haber Tony Rosato runs an orphanage and plans a vacation, leaving the day-to-day duties to his father, Harry Haber Leslie Nielsen, who runs a nearby rental store. After hearing Cliff describe how challenging it is to place the orphans with loving families, Harry begins to imagine a provocative idea: renting out orphans to prospective adoptive parents. The notion takes root as he mulls the possibilities, nudging the parent-child dynamic into a gray area that neither Cliff nor Harry fully anticipated.

While Cliff is away, a chance overheard moment at a Mexican restaurant turns the idea from theory into action. Russ Syracuse Matt McCoy and Valerie Syracuse Sherry Miller argue about their longing to have children, a dispute that resonates with Harry’s growing plan. This encounter plants the seed for a bold experiment: they decide to rent all three Ward children—Brandon Ward Amos Crawley, Kyle Ward Cody Jones, and Molly Ward Tabitha Lupien.

A visit from the Lachmans—Mr. Lachman Edward Heeley and Mrs. Lachman Tannis Burnett—to the orphanage sets the stakes higher. They come hoping to adopt a girl, and Molly Ward is chosen. Cliff is told the news and conveys it to Molly, who feels torn because leaving Kyle and Brandon would mean parting from her brothers. In response, Cliff and Harry press ahead with a plan to present the children at their best, hoping Russ and Valerie will fall in love with them and decide to keep them as a family.

The children put on their best behavior, and the hopeful adoptive parents face the challenges of ten days with three new wards. The situation is layered with small triumphs and setbacks as the children navigate new routines, new expectations, and the delicate balance of pretending to be the ideal family while clinging to each other. Despite the ups and downs, the emotional push and pull culminates in a decision: Russ and Valerie ultimately choose to adopt Molly, Brandon, and Kyle.

Behind the scenes, Harry continues to shield his rental scheme from Cliff, keeping the operation under wraps as long as possible. A form left on the office table near the phone becomes a crucial clue that hints at the scope of the plan. When Cliff returns and discovers the evidence, he confronts Harry outside the apartment building where Russ and Valerie live, accusing him of being reckless or even insane. The moment is tense, but it resolves with an unexpected understanding: Cliff recognizes that Harry’s ruse worked, and the children have found a home with a loving family.

In the end, what began as a controversial experiment unfolds into a home for the kids and a complicated reconciliation between two generations. The film threads together themes of family, intention, and the unexpected ways a difficult situation can resolve when love informs tough choices.
