Help (2021) Plot Summary Explained

In 2019, a dedicated care assistant named Sarah begins her journey at Bright Sky Homes, a care facility located in Liverpool. She quickly establishes a strong rapport with the residents, particularly with a middle-aged gentleman named Tony, played by Blake Ridder, who is battling early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Struggling with his memory, Tony often leaves the building in search of his mother’s house, unaware that she has passed away, and that their home is now occupied by another family.

As the COVID-19 pandemic begins to spread across the UK in March 2020, the situation becomes increasingly dire for care homes like Bright Sky. An outbreak within the facility is exacerbated by a critical shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), as resources are diverted to NHS hospitals, leaving caregivers vulnerable and unprotected.

One fateful night while on duty alone, Sarah faces a serious crisis when resident Kenny goes into a severe coughing fit. Frantically, she reaches out to the COVID-19 hotline as well as NHS 111, only to discover that no ambulances are available in the area. In a moment of desperation and fear, she enlists Tony’s help, who is Kenny’s close friend. Together, they attempt to assist, but Kenny’s condition remains grave.

The story takes a turn when Sarah learns that Tony has been prescribed new medication by Steve, the head of the care home. Confronting Steve about her concerns, she is met with the explanation that the change was mandated by Tony's GP. Frustrated and protective, Sarah makes the bold decision to take Tony out of Bright Sky and retreats to a family-owned caravan, where they spend the next twelve days. During this time, Sarah’s father Bob checks in on them, offering his support and asking if they need any supplies.

Unfortunately, their brief escape comes to an end when the police, alerted by dog walkers who noticed the pair, find them playing Shithead in the caravan. Tony is taken back to Bright Sky, and Sarah faces arrest for her actions.

While being driven away in the back of a police car, Sarah breaks the fourth wall, reaching out to the audience with a cautionary message about the importance of acknowledging the needs of individuals in society—be it those in social care or the countless families relying on food banks. The film concludes on a somber note, presenting shocking statistics about the number of deaths in UK care homes during the early days of the pandemic, as well as the alarmingly insufficient supplies of PPE provided by the government.
