Heer Raanjha

Raanjha is the local Romeo of Takht Hazara, living with his seven wealthy brothers. Despite warnings about the feud between Takht Hazara and Jhang, he decides to travel to the wedding in Jhang. His determination to cross clan lines sets the stage for the lovers' fate and the centuries-old feud. The decision marks the film’s inciting moment and the start of all subsequent events.

During the wedding dance, Raanjha meets Heer, the charming daughter of a Jhang landlord. He is instantly drawn to her beauty and grace, and their attraction is undeniable. Heer, aware of their enemy villages, is cautious yet curious about him. This meeting begins their forbidden romance.

After confessing his desire to know her, Heer asks him to stay only if he can endure life in her world. He promises to stay as long as the river Chenab flows, and her parents agree to employ him as their cowherd. The arrangement gives them private moments to grow closer while hiding their feelings. Their secret meetings intensify their bond.

Heer reveals her love for Raanjha through a song, filling him with happiness. He returns her feelings with unwavering devotion. When Heer's mother and friends search for her, she slips into the river and nearly drowns, only to be saved by Raanjha's life-risking act.

Raanjha uses the money gifted by Bade Choudhary to buy new clothes, jewelry, and gifts, signaling his intent to win Heer’s hand. The lavish gestures aim to elevate their standing in the eyes of her family. The couple’s romance now has material fuel, though the bigger obstacles remain.

Chote Choudhury, Heer’s uncle, grows furious watching their affection. He reports the affair to Heer’s family and teams up with Heer’s mother to remove Raanjha from Heer’s life. They plot to marry Heer off to a wealthy man named Saida, fearing the loss of control over Heer.

Bade Choudhary tries to bridge the families and restore peace, but Chote Choudhury hires goons to humiliate Raanjha and his brothers. The invaders disrupt the families’ attempt at reconciliation, driving the brothers away and locking Raanjha up in a room. Resentment grows as old enmities flare anew.

The older men of Jhang insist that Heer wedding Saida would be better for social order. Bade Choudhary reluctantly agrees to the match, and Kazi bribes the wedding official to claim Heer accepted, sealing the arrangement. Heer resists, but the pressure from the village’s power structure grows stronger.

Heer is forcibly taken to Saida’s house as part of the arranged marriage. Raanjha escapes from his home to confront Heer’s father, who condemns him as a traitor. Both men realize the mastermind behind the plot is Chote Choudhury, whose scheming has torn them apart.

Raanjha journeys to Saida’s village and discovers Heer living there in Saida’s household as a servant. In disguise, she recognizes him, and their reunion rekindles their bond. They secretly renew their vow to be together despite the odds.

Saida’s men drag the lovers back to Saida’s house, intending to separate them permanently. Fortuitously, passing king’s soldiers intervene, rescuing them and taking the matter to the royal court for resolution. The lovers’ fate now rests with the king’s judgment.

In the king’s court, a mute tailor testifies that he witnessed Kazi taking a bribe from Chote Choudhury, exposing the plot to distort the truth. The king rules in favor of Heer and Raanjha, recognizing the lovers’ sincerity. Families converge as the ruling grants them the right to marry.

With the ruling secured, Heer and Raanjha wed in a grand ceremony that unites the feuding factions. They are taken in a palanquin to Raanjha’s house, signaling a new alliance and a hopeful future. The entire village joins in the celebration, though the shadow of tragedy lingers on the horizon.

Upon arrival, Heer is found dead after consuming a poison-laced delicacy given by Chote Choudhury. Heartbroken, Raanjha dies soon after, unable to endure life without his beloved. The lovers’ deaths bring the feuding families to a sorrowful, irreversible conclusion.
