In the Welsh village of Trawsfynydd, Huw Garmon brings to life Ellis Humphrey Evans, the young poet who writes under the bardic name Hedd Wyn and dreams of winning the National Eisteddfod’s Chief Bard chair. A farmer’s son, he grows up with a deep love for language, landscape, and the traditions that bind his community. He writes with quiet intensity, hoping his verses will someday ring through festival fields and earn him a place in Welsh cultural memory. When World War I erupts and Britain declares war on Germany in August 1914, several local men enlist, including Ellis’s close friend Gruffydd Aled Griff. Yet Ellis wrestles with a moral conflict: could he bear taking a life, and is he ready to abandon the peaceful world he cherishes?

On a train journey, Ellis meets Judith Humphreys as Jini Owen, a young woman who is drawn to his poetry. She admires his art, and their budding romance unfolds through letters and shared moments, offering him a beacon of warmth amid the looming war. Back at the family farm, a draft-board official arrives and records the names of Ellis and his brother Dafydd Rowlands Bob Evans, despite their mother’s protests. The draft leaves little room for choice: one of the Evans brothers must enlist, and Ellis, with a heavy heart, declines to let his younger brother go in his place.

Eventually, Ellis makes the sacrifice of enlisting, joining the Royal Welch Fusiliers in Liverpool. He trains with quiet resolve, determined to honor his homeland and his art. He pleads with his platoon commander to send his awdl, Yr Arwr (The Hero), via the Army Postal Service, hoping the poem can travel ahead of him and stand as a testament to Welsh spirit. The film blends intimate scenes of rural life with the harsh discipline of army life, showing how a poet’s voice sits within the grit of a soldier’s daily regimen and camaraderie.

The narrative expands to the frontline, where the brutal realities of the Battle of Passchendaele unfold. On 31 July 1917, the Fusiliers go over the top, and Ellis witnesses comrades fall under withering fire while the mud and shells close in around him. He is seriously wounded and spent hours in no man’s land before a nearby aid post can reach him. His family back home receives a telegram confirming his death, and Jini reads his final letter, in which he asks for her hand in marriage. Soon after, another telegram arrives to deliver the even more poignant news that his submission has won the National Eisteddfod; the prized chair is sent to the Evans farmhouse, wrapped in black as a solemn tribute to a life cut short.

This is a story about the human cost of war and the way art can outlive catastrophe. It honors Ellis’s memory as a poet and as a man of conscience, and it underscores how Welsh culture and family bonds endure even in the darkest times. The performances anchor the film’s emotional resonance, with the central portrayal by Huw Garmon and a talented ensemble bringing to life a narrative that braids love, duty, and the price of peace in a world torn by conflict.
