In 1956, Shirley Roque made the pivotal decision to leave her job as a waitress and embrace a domestic life. This choice included marrying Jack Muldowney, despite her father's apprehensions about her independence.

After their marriage, Jack transitioned from being an auto mechanic to managing a local gas station. While Shirley settled into homemaking, Jack sought thrills on the open road through illegal midnight racing.

Inspired by Jack's racing exploits, Shirley urged him to let her try her hand at it. To everyone's surprise, she displayed a natural talent for speed, impressing both her husband and their racing competitors.

A significant moment in Shirley's journey occurred when she met the legendary racer 'Big Daddy' Don Garlits. This encounter sparked her determination to pursue sponsorship from major automotive brands, challenging the norms of the racing world.

Supported by Jack, Shirley began the process of crafting a bespoke dragster. Despite skepticism about her capabilities in a male-dominated sport, she was fueled by her passion for racing.

By 1966, Shirley was preparing to compete in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). With the endorsement of Garlits and fellow driver Connie Kalitta, she finally secured the necessary signatures for her entry into the competitive racing scene.

During her very first attempt to qualify for an NHRA event, Shirley made waves by setting a track record. This achievement was a testament to her hard work and determination, solidifying her presence in the racing community.
