In San Francisco during 1959, four individuals—Penny, Harrison, Julia, and Milo—board a late-night trolleybus. Each is burdened by their own personal struggles, setting the stage for a fateful journey.

Penny, a single mother, grapples with guilt about leaving her three children alone to work the night shift. Her internal turmoil reflects the burden of her choices during the ride.

Harrison, a wannabe singer, faces a critical moment as he prepares for an audition but ultimately succumbs to fear. This failure haunts him, and he reflects on what could have been during the journey.

Having recently rejected a marriage proposal, Julia escapes her waitressing job to chase after her boyfriend, John. She is torn between her feelings and the fear of commitment, indicating deeper emotional struggles.

Milo, a small-time thief, fails to recover a valuable stamp book he had tricked from a young boy, leaving him with a heavy conscience. His past mistakes weigh him down significantly during the bus ride.

The trolleybus driver, Hal, is distracted by an alluring passenger, leading to a catastrophic crash. The bus swerves off an overpass, resulting in the tragic deaths of all aboard, including our four main characters.

Meanwhile, Frank Reilly rushes to the hospital with his pregnant wife, Eva. Amidst the chaos of the trolley crash, Eva gives birth to their son, Thomas, directly in the car, marking a new beginning.

In an unexpected twist, the spirits of the four trolley passengers become intertwined with baby Thomas's existence. They can communicate with him, instilling in him their unresolved issues from their lives.

As Thomas grows, his parents notice his attachment to his 'invisible friends,' causing them concern over his mental health. They fear that his unusual behavior might lead to a separation from them as he struggles with his reality.

Thirty-four years later, Hal is still driving the trolleybus, now tasked with guiding the spirits to the afterlife. He recognizes his past mistakes and seeks closure for the four souls who have lingered by Thomas's side.

The quartet of spirits strives to resolve their unfinished business tied to baby Thomas. Each spirit has their own lingering matters to settle, such as Penny's concern for her children and Harrison's dream of singing.

Thomas embarks on a mission to locate Penny's daughters, discovering that one was adopted after her unfortunate passing. He realizes that their fates are still intertwined and his connection to them is vital.

In a bold move, Harrison seizes the chance to sing at a B.B. King concert using Thomas as a vessel. This moment, however, leads to a confrontation with the police, complicating Thomas's already turbulent life.

Thomas and Julia write a heartfelt letter to John but are devastated to learn he has died. Julia realizes she must confront her own feelings and help Thomas avoid repeating her past mistakes in love.

As Thomas articulates his fears under the stars, he connects deeply with Anne, sharing a dance that symbolizes new beginnings. This moment leads to the emergence of four new stars in the sky, representing Penny, Julia, Harrison, and Milo finally finding peace.
