Over the Moon in Love

Fei Fei, a curious and imaginative girl, grows up surrounded by the legend of the Moon goddess Chang’e, who reportedly drank a potion for immortality and rose to the Moon to wait for her beloved Houyi. As the village prepares for the annual Moon Festival, Fei Fei and her family bake mooncakes and share stories under the glow of lanterns. When Fei Fei’s mother falls ill, she gives her daughter a beloved white rabbit named Bungee, and Fei Fei clings to the belief that Chang’e is real. Tragically, Fei Fei’s mother passes away when Fei Fei is seven, leaving her with a longing for wonder that only grows with time.

Years later, Fei Fei is eleven and still clings to the Chang’e myth four years after her mother’s death. She is dismayed to learn that her father is engaged to Mrs. Zhong, who brings along her energetic eight-year-old son Chin, who has a pet frog and a knack for getting under Fei Fei’s skin. The Moon Festival Reunion brings tension and questions about the myth she longs to prove. When her father hesitates to confirm Chang’e’s existence, Fei Fei’s frustration boils over, and she retreats to her room to dream up a bold plan: build a rocket to the Moon to prove Chang’e real. Her design is clever and symbolic—a rocket shaped like a rabbit lantern that uses fireworks to push it toward the sky.

The rocket’s takeoff is almost flawless, but chaos erupts when Chin sneaks aboard. The moment they crash back to Earth is interrupted by a shimmering, mystical beam that drags their craft toward the Moon. The crash lands them in Lunaria, a radiant lunar land where two friendly winged guardian lions greet them and whisk them to Chang’e’s realm.

On Lunaria, Chang’e greets Fei Fei and introduces her to the Lunettes, her troupe of backup dancers. Chang’e explains that Fei Fei was meant to deliver a gift to Houyi, but Fei Fei has no idea what this gift might be. A tense exchange follows as Chang’e demands the gift, and a photo Fei Fei takes with Chang’e is seized by the goddess herself. The goddess declares a contest to locate the gift before the last of the moondust falls, setting Fei Fei on a quest that will force her to confront loss, memory, and the power of moving on.

Fei Fei’s journey becomes a race against time and a test of resilience. After a quarrel with Chin, Fei Fei leaves and ends up traveling with a group known as the Biker Chicks to the site of the rocket’s wreck. Chin, meanwhile, witnesses Chang’e’s capture of a group of Lunarians who hold a clue to the gift, and Chang’e challenges him to a game of ping-pong to gain that information. Chin proves resourceful, but Chang’e’s sorrow deepens, lamenting that she may never see Houyi again.

As the search intensifies, Bungee follows the Jade Rabbit into a distant workshop, while Fei Fei and the Biker Chicks discover an exile named Gobi and a Chang’e doll that Fei Fei suspects might be the coveted gift. Their mission takes them on the back of giant toads to Lunaria’s capital, where Gobi reveals the reason for his exile: a song about moving on. The journey pits Fei Fei against setbacks, including the destruction of the Chang’e doll, and a mooncake containing a missing jade circle fragment that matches one Chang’e wears around her neck.

With courage and a touch of luck, Fei Fei and Gobi catch up to the Biker Chicks and recover the truth: the broken jade circle inside a mooncake is indeed Chang’e’s gift. They return to Lunaria’s palace, where the gift is restored to a complete jade circle. Chang’e and Houyi briefly reunite, but Houyi urges Chang’e to move on, and he fades away. Her heartbreak deepens, plunging Lunaria into darkness, yet Fei Fei realizes that both she and Chang’e must confront their tragedies and choose to move forward with love all around them.

In a shared moment of strength, Fei Fei and Chang’e support each other as they embrace the idea that life’s grief can coexist with hope. The pair lift Lunaria’s shadow, and Chang’e grants Fei Fei and Chin safe passage home—Bungee stays behind on the Moon with Jade Rabbit. Gobi’s banishment is lifted, and the two worlds begin to heal.

Back on Earth, Fei Fei accepts her father’s marriage to Mrs. Zhong and welcomes Chin as a stepbrother. A year passes, and Fei Fei’s family grows with warmth and care, especially from her father, Mrs. Zhong, and Chin. The Moon Festival returns, and Fei Fei, now twelve, looks up at the Moon with a sense of belonging and gratitude as cranes ascend toward the lunar glow, a quiet reminder that love, memory, and new beginnings can coexist under the same sky.
