Halal Love Story

The film opens with Rahim, a devoted member of a Muslim religious group who believes cinema is often Haram and decides to make a Halal film. He teams up with Shereef, a street-play actor known for his protests, and together they seek out Thoufeeq to craft the screenplay. Due to various constraints, Thoufeeq suggests that a one-hour telefilm could be a practical alternative to a full-length feature.

With the organization’s approval, Siraj is brought on as director. Thoufeeq describes him as mainstream enough, given his personal habits. The plan calls for casting from within the organization, though a wider search for the leads is conducted. A real husband-and-wife pair is required for the leads to satisfy their Halal norms, so the wife of Shereef, Suhra, is cast as the heroine, and Shereef steps in as the hero.

As filming begins, the performances feel uneven, and shooting halts. Haseena, a casting director, steps in to provide basic acting training to the group. During the workshop, the actors learn that a lie Shereef once told about Suhra’s father has caused tension. The discussion leaves him defensive. By the end of the session, six people are chosen for the project, including the lead, and the pairing remains essential.

As production continues, Siraj notices deeper strains between Suhra and Shereef and relays this to Thoufeeq, prompting a rewrite aimed at smoothing their relationship. Yet the plan for a climactic hug encounters resistance from Thoufeeq, who worries about how the moment would be perceived by the community. The crew finds a potential workaround, and the cinematographer, Assif Yogi, says he knows a way to keep the scene within Halal boundaries. When the hug finally appears on camera, Thoufeeq interrupts, but the team is told that a halal cut has already been prepared. Siraj, relieved, senses that the couple’s difficulties are resolving on screen as well.

The story closes with Rahim and his family performing Salah while the film runs on a TV, signaling a cautious harmony between faith, art, and communal expectations.
